Conversations with Alexa Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Davis.

Hi Alexa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been baking since I was 11 years old. I always had a love for feeding people; as the oldest of two daughters raised by a single mother, I would cook and bake for all the kids on my neighborhood street. I leaned more into the culinary side during high school and after I graduated, attending Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I didn’t finish school due to becoming a young mother, I never lost my love for cooking and baking. When the opportunity arose for me to get back to what I loved, I started my first business, LEX EATS, in 2020, doing dinner sales and catering, with every meal including a specialty baked good. However, that came to a halt when I became pregnant with my second child. I decided to pivot into the baking world, which gave me more time for preparation and allowed me to dive deeper into the artistic side of cake decorating. For the past 4 years, I’ve baked while everyone else sleeps, processed over 900 orders on my own with no employees, and continued to hone my skills while being a stay-at-home mom to two boys. I absolutely love what I do and the smiles I get to bring to people’s faces on their special days.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anytime you start something new there will always be struggles, but that is a part of the process. I struggled with time management, getting over being a perfectionist, hitting periods of burnout frequently and setting boundaries/policies in my business. Thankfully, overtime, my mistakes turned into lessons to better handle those struggles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom cakes. I know that that leaves a lot of room for imagination and that is the best part of my job. I have always been a very artistic and expressive person since I was a child and the fact that my job allows me to continue to express that part of me makes me feel extremely fulfilled. I have done anything from birthday cakes, promotional cakes, retirement cakes and wedding cakes. I pride myself in creating one of a kind cakes that are specially made for the person being celebrated.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned that you are only as great as you think you are. I have earned so much praise and applause from customers, close friends and family but, the only voice that ever truly mattered to me was my own. You really have to carry yourself with a certain level of confidence and know yourself to be an entrepreneur. Your limits in business are the ones that you put on yourself and when you have none you can really become successful.
