Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Nelson.
Hi Cassandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in healthcare began in my teens with my own irregular cycles and significant monthly pain. Although I was often told this was normal, I wanted to understand why it was happening, and why didn’t seem to be a regularly discussed factor. After years of seeing multiple specialists and even being told nothing was wrong, I began to question my own body. Eventually, a specialist truly listened, performed a laparoscopy, and I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. The diagnosis was validating, but I still endured multiple surgeries and ongoing challenges.
I began utilizing acupuncture on a regular basis and everything changed. Within three months, my cycle regulated and the pain disappeared. That transformation deeply inspired me. Six months later, I began my graduate studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine, determined to help other women feel heard.
After earning my BA from San Diego State University and my MS in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science, I was selected in 2008 to apprentice with internationally recognized fertility expert Randine Lewis at The Fertile Soul. Working with Randine for three years shaped my specialization in fertility and women’s health because we focus not on what’s “wrong,” like in western medicine, but on what’s going well and what we have influence over – like thought patterns, food choices, and understanding your cycle.
Over the past 19 years, I’ve built a practice focused on hormone balance, fertility, and emotional well-being. Today, through Acupuncture & Fertility, I provide a safe, supportive space where women can feel heard, restore balance, and heal from the inside out.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Healthcare is not a smooth road, but it’s rewarding. Working in fertility medicine is emotionally charged and sensitive. Over the years, physicians have gained more insight into how acupuncture can support fertility protocols which has made it easier on the patients who seek comprehensive care.
I think transparency in women’s healthcare is often missing so my goal is to teach women how to better understand their body’s signs and signals so when an issue arises, they are more prepared.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Acupuncture & Fertility?
First, I am a Licensed Acupuncturist, a National Board-Certified Chinese Medicine Herbalist, and a National Board-Certified Diplomat of Oriental Medicine. I am an expert in alternative medicine fertility.
Second, I consider myself a Fertility Coach, although I’m not a fan of that word. My fertility work is broad and includes helping women balance their cycles, regulate hormone levels, understand how to track their cycles, learn what their symptoms really mean, and what optimal lab results look like. I explain why – when your doctors say things are normal – you still may be having symptoms or still struggling with getting pregnant. Because I am a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, I apply my tools to resolve issues, including fertility acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Eastern nutrition, nutraceuticals, lifestyle counseling, Qi Gong and fertility exercises.
Through my clinic, Acupuncture & Fertility, I offer a space for women to be truly heard and cared for in a safe, healing space. It is a place to recover from life’s stress and heal from the inside out.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those acupuncturists who are just starting out, find a subject matter in which you are truly passionate and then specialize. Seek new teachers and ask to apprentice. Don’t be afraid to be a beginner; get comfortable with being uncomfortable because working in healthcare is daunting but incredibly rewarding.
