Meet Michael Maschek of Charleston Woodwork Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Maschek.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Charleston Woodwork Creations was born out of a love for cabinetry and fine woodworking. Our founder, Michael Maschek, has always worked with his hands — he started in roofing, then tile, then finish carpentry, then build carpentry and general construction, before apprenticing with a master cabinetmaker to learn cabinetmaking. With cabinetmaking, Mike found his groove, and with enough experience and a bit of borrowed capital, opened his own cabinetry and woodworking studio. Over the past 5 years, Charleston Woodwork Creations has grown, now working with some of the largest interior designers in Charleston and doing high-end furniture commissions. Mike remains intimately involved in every project, large and small, ensuring that Charleston Woodwork Creations is synonymous with quality and craftmanship.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Last year, Mike bought out a former business partner, whose style was threatening the company’s growth and new relationships. The split was far from amicable, with the former business partner attempting to sabotage jobs and ruin the company’s reputation. Eventually it was sorted out in court, but the ordeal set the company back financially and imposed a a mental toll on everyone. Thankfully, we had the shop, and by continuing to do what we all love and create products that people love, we were able to put the episode behind us.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Charleston Woodwork Creations is Charleston’s premier custom cabinetry and fine woodworking studio. We specialize in custom cabinetry, millwork/trim, and fine wood furniture.

What set us apart is that we can do everything in-house: design, fabrication/assembly, finish, and installation. This means: shorter lead times, quality assurance, and no risk of miscommunication between steps/vendors. We can collaborate with you and answer questions/accommodate requests every step of the way. And because we are a small team/studio, we don’t have a ton of overhead — we can operate more leanly than our bigger competitors. It’s the best of all worlds — high quality and dedicated service at a reasonable price.
