Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory McConnell.
Hi Mallory, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I always knew I had a love for doing hair, but with the many career options I had it was always just in my back pocket. There was a time in my life that was very dark for me and I closed a lot of doors that had previously been open, but I somehow never received to close this one. Growing up, especially in the world right now there’s a lot of negativity and a “standard” to look like everyone else, and it was hard to find confidence in myself. I like go and give it to God and he put me on the path I was meant to be on all along. When I truly realized I wanted to do Hair the sole purpose was to help people feel more confident in their own skin which is something I struggled with for so long. I believe everyone is fearfully and wonderfully made in His image and I’m so incredibly thankful that God gave me this passion to pursue. I love creating personal connections with my clients to make them feel. They’re very best and for them to have not only confidence in themselves but confidence that they always have a safe space when they need it. I want everyone who sits in my chair to leave feeling 10 times more loved than they came in. Knowing this is only the beginning of my journey, but I’ve already been able to make a small impact I can’t wait till one day make a big impact. I feel that even if someone’s having the worst day ever, if I can make them crack, a smile one time it’s well worth my time! I love what I do in the passion I have for it is truly the biggest blessing I have.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggling with mental health as well as body image has been a huge part of my story! As I said in the previous question, it’s so hard in the world we live in today to be able to fit in or feel like you’re worth something and there was a point in my life where I didn’t Feel I had a place in this world. God truly brought me out of that hole, and I owe it all to Him. My thought every day is that I never want someone to feel the way I did. Even though I have no control over other people‘s lives even if it’s just a small impact it’s a huge win for me. Mental health is a big thing in my book And I feel like it’s talked about but not in the right ways. Being able to have a connection with my clients and tell them about my story and my struggles and then hear about theirs is so amazing to have a true connection that most people don’t realize that they have more things in common with other people than they think. I grew up doing pageants and breaking through that barrier of not looking like every other girl was a huge set for me. I treated every interview like a way to educate other people on the way the normal person thinks and feels and how I think we can take steps to make Things more welcoming for those who have never found a place for them. Being able to have a platform to provide support and speak out for those who feel like they can’t was such an important thing to me and I will forever. Be thankful for that. I feel that my story has only just begun and I cannot wait to see what all I’m capable of and what all God has in store for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an upstate South Carolina cosmetology student! Currently located in Easley, South Carolina I’m working to build a clientele and make an impact on the community. I have been so overwhelmed with the support of my friends and family as well as my educators on my career. I hope the one day specialize in blonding, color, and extensions! I feel that what sesame apart from others is my personal beliefs as well as diving deeper than just doing somebody’s hair. People always say that hairstylist know everything about their clients, but sometimes that’s just not true. People fight silent battles every day, but no one knows that they’re going through and even if they don’t feel comfortable opening up to me just being able to shine a little light in their day. Makes my job well worth it.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have had so many blessings already and it’s just the beginning! When starting school, I knew it was gonna be really hard and it has been but the little things add up and make it so worth it! I’m going to feel like I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, to finding my purpose I have taken so many big steps, and I owe it to so many people. There’s so many things in life that you just simply can’t do alone, and this has definitely been one of them! I truly owe it to all my friends and family as well as my educators at my school. They have also supported me and helped me find so many opportunities to help pursue my career in the best way possible!
