Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Warren.
Hi Mark, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Absolutely, Marko. Here’s a bold, honest, forward-looking story arc based on everything you’ve shared—from college graduation to launching Marko’s Media and stepping into teaching:

From Newsroom to Classroom: The Road to Marko’s Media
When I walked across that stage and picked up my college diploma, I had one goal in mind: to tell real stories. Not the watered-down kind, but raw, authentic moments that mattered to everyday people. That drive landed me in local television, where I hustled my way into a 25-year career as a photojournalist, eventually becoming Chief Photographer at Fox Carolina. I didn’t just shoot video—I lived it. Crime scenes at 2 a.m., hurricanes rolling in, small-town heroes doing big things. I trained rookies, mentored interns, and poured my heart into telling the truth with a camera on my shoulder.
But here’s the thing no one tells you: even if you love the job, the industry can stop loving you back. Somewhere along the way, the corporate gears shifted. After Gray Media took over, the newsroom I once loved turned toxic. Bullying, gaslighting, and backroom politics became the norm. I fought to stay above it. I spoke up, hoping things would change. They didn’t. Instead, I was blamed for problems I didn’t create, and after years of loyalty and integrity, I found myself pushed out. No exit plan. No apology. Just the weight of burnout and a panic attack that forced me to stop and breathe for the first time in decades.
It sucked. But it saved me.
Out of that chaos came clarity. I wasn’t done telling stories—I just needed to do it on my terms. That’s how Marko’s Media was born. It’s more than a video company; it’s a mission to help small businesses in my community stand out and thrive. I create fast-paced, eye-catching videos that connect people with local brands. I’ve got the experience, the eye, and the fire. What I don’t have in budget, I make up for in hustle and heart.
And now? I’m stepping into something that feels just as important as any Emmy-winning story I’ve ever shot: teaching.
I’ve joined the team at Byrnes High School as a Media Technology teacher. I get to show the next generation how powerful storytelling can be, not just with a camera, but with purpose. I’m bringing real-world experience to the classroom—lessons from the field, not just from a textbook. We’ll cover lighting, editing, interviewing, ethics, and how to make content that matters. These kids will learn how to craft a killer story—and maybe how to spot the corporate BS too.
It’s not the path I expected. It’s better.
So here I am—camera still rolling, story still unfolding. Marko’s Media is growing, the classroom is calling, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Not even close.
The past year and a half has been one of the most challenging seasons of my life. Leaving a 25+ year career in local news wasn’t something I planned—it was something I had to do. I stood up against a toxic newsroom culture, spoke out when it would’ve been easier to stay quiet, and paid the price for it. I walked away with no job lined up, no fallback, and more questions than answers.
I faced burnout, anxiety, and self-doubt. I had to rebuild not just my career, but my confidence. I started paying for my own health insurance, took contract gigs to stay afloat, and wrestled with the pressure of providing for my family while starting over in my 40s.
But through that storm came purpose.
I launched Marko’s Media to take back control—using my skills to help local businesses tell their stories with clarity and creativity. And I said yes to teaching, because I realized I had more to give than just video work—I had experience, lessons, and truth that students deserved to hear.
It hasn’t been easy. It’s been real. And honestly? I wouldn’t trade it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Marko’s Media, I help local businesses stand out with bold, authentic marketing. I specialize in video production, content creation, and consulting—from concept to final cut. Whether it’s a 30-second spot or a full brand story, I bring 25+ years of storytelling experience to every project.
This fall, I’m also stepping into a new role as a Media Technology teacher at Byrnes High School—passing on what I’ve learned to the next generation of creators.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is walking to Tunnel Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was just a short stroll from where we lived in Holland, but as a kid, it felt like an adventure. I still remember the cool breeze off the lake, the thrill of running through the tunnel carved into the dune, and that moment when it opened up to the wide-open beach—it was magic. We’d spend hours playing in the sand, jumping waves, and watching the sunset paint the sky orange and pink.
It was the perfect place to grow up—simple, beautiful, and full of freedom. I still love visiting when I can, but these days, South Carolina is home. The beaches are warmer, the pace a little slower, but every time I hear waves crash, part of me goes right back to Tunnel Park.
