Hidden Gems: Meet Courtney Floyd of Chucktown Wax & Wick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Floyd.

Courtney Floyd

Hi Courtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During January of 2020, I discovered a therapeutic escape from life’s daily stressors. The process of selecting fragrances, pouring the wax, and creating an enchanting ambiance became my personal sanctuary, a moment to center myself and let go of the day’s worries. But my candles were destined for more than just personal indulgence. They held the power to elevate the spirits and moods of those around me. With every gentle flicker, my candles transformed spaces into cozy retreats, inviting people to take a pause and embrace the present moment. The welcoming aromas and soft glows became catalysts for relaxation and rejuvenation, encouraging others to put their own self-care first. While working in healthcare and attending graduate school during the pandemic, my journey into the candle business became a path to mental clarity and healing. The demanding nature of the healthcare field often left my mind cluttered but within the serenity and creativity of candle-making, I discovered an escape from the madness. As I continue on this journey, my candle business remains a reminder of the importance of prioritizing self-care, the power of positivity, and the ability to infuse goodness into the lives of others. It is a testament to my own growth and the healing that comes from pursuing one’s passions. With each candle ignited, I aspire to ignite a flame of happiness in the hearts of those who encounter the light I create.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the challenges I face in my handcrafted candle business is sourcing material. I originally used glass vessels but the supply chain challenges brought on by the pandemic encouraged me to find an alternative vessel. I currently make each vessel by hand using concrete and molds and while it’s very time consuming, I love creating a unique product. Of course, inflation has also resulted in increased costs for wax, oils, and shipping but I’m grateful to have my amazing customers that understand the costs of operating.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Chucktown Wax & Wick?
I create candles in concrete vessels by hand from start to finish. Candles range from $7-$35 (so that everyone can enjoy them at all price points) Candles are handpoured into handcast unique concrete vessels. Each item is packaged with eco consciousness and sustainability in mind–all items are biodegradable. Each order is accompanied by a free tealight sample & coupon code so that customers get a chance to discover a new fragrance with each order. I pride myself on being the only local candlemaker that creates affordable concrete candles so that everyone can find a scent in a modern vessel that they love.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel that being well organized is a characteristic that is most important to my success—especially because I hold a full time and a part time job on top of owning Chucktown Wax & Wick. As a business owner and creative, I find myself loving the creative side but I understand the importance of the business side so I keep lists and calendar entries to track my tasks and candle deliveries.
