Today we’d like to introduce you to Harrison Bryant.
Hi Harrison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
From high school to college, with an associate degree in industrial electronics and electronics technology, I always loved music. I played in the Band for 4 years. I was on the Radio for 3 years. So, I always had a vast background in the business. To start, I was a famous big-time DJ. I was even on Bet a few times. I did a lot of big shows in different areas, and I was always complimented on how good my sound was. So when promoters do small shows, they ask me to DJ and pay me a little extra to bring my speakers for the artist. I got so well known that a few significant artists started booking me to bring speakers and not DJs, and the money that was made from doing sound was much better than the DJing gig. In 2011, I broke at the Township in Columbia, SC, where I did an artist named FUTURE. The concert was sold out, and I was a sound guy from that day. I began educating myself with all the equipment and also traveled with different Major engineers who taught me a Majority of what I know today in 2014. is when I started hiring workers and evolving into what is now Quietstorm Sound Video Stages and Lighting. I have 12 employees, and we travel from the southeast, where we perform concerts and festivals.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been relatively smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a challenging road at all. Being of color often makes it 2x as complex to get information or business loans. Or even being looked at for a bid to win a concert. In today’s world, things steadily change, and people always want the newest gear. So back, before I could afford specific equipment, I would get used stuff that could get me by till I could afford the more industry-standard equipment, so that meant that a lot of shows slipped through my hands. Even though I got the vast shows, I never took them because I wanted to please the crowd and make my name good. So my company missed out on a lot of money. So, it took me a while to get to where I am now.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
So, I am the owner of QuietStorm, a small /medium-sized sound company that provides LED walls, mobile stages, concert sound, and lighting. We also have a department where we rent to other companies. Regarding my responsibilities, I educate my Guys on how to do specific Jobs. Everyone has a different skill set; I have lighting engineers, sound engineers, and Stage techs. And more. I train everyone on what they’re most qualified for. I’m most proud of staying in business for over 20 years, purchasing everything, and not having to take out loans and owe people. What sets us apart most of the time is that it’s a minority company, and a lot of people think we don’t do what we do. For instance, we just did a concert in NC, and the entire production covered 14k people, and it was an excellent experience. I can only say I’m blessed.
How do you define success?
Success is starting from the bottom and having a desire and dream for the impossible. Then, I set far-fetched goals. Move daily to the set goal, and when you have reached that point, cross it. I claim it to be a success.
