Hidden Gems: Meet Trent Rushton of Local Boy Nursery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trent Rushton.

Trent Rushton

Hi Trent, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was raised in the small town of Wagener, SC. As a boy, I grew up roaming the woods and countryside. My love for nature is rooted in me. I grew up with the trees. I gained a passion for farming at a young age and have pursued it since. In high school, I enjoyed athletics, FFA, and the daily camaraderie of my peers. I was most proud of my time with the Football Team and my tenure as the State FFA President. After graduating from Clemson in 2017, I started growing landscape plants with dreams of making a living there. I was broke when I started this business. In my first few installs, I did out the trunk of my grandmother’s car. I’m not ashamed to admit that I came from humble beginnings; it only makes the story sweeter. Fast forward to today, and we are still very much a growing nursery and landscaping company. We have grown little by little, all thanks to the wonderful customers who have supported us from the early days through now! I appreciate them all immensely. Today, many excellent employees work diligently to keep the business growing. The plant business is challenging. We have to baby our product.

Looking forward to the very near future, we are getting ready to launch our first website. We will begin selling plants on the Internet directly from the site and plan to ship nationwide. I am thankful that I can positively affect so many people, and I am genuinely grateful to God for blessing me with this opportunity.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Hearing loss has always caused me some minor frustration, but honestly, you learn to live with it. It’s alright, but it’s bad enough to be bothersome. Obstacles constantly arise in this business and life. Starting from nothing, it seems every day has brought new struggles. It does get easier, though. It’s the diligence that changes your outcome. Consistency has paid for me when nothing else would. We all have to prove to ourselves, for some of us, that payment is due daily.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Local Boy Nursery?
We are a full-service nursery and landscaping company. We have various perennials, landscape shrubbery, landscape trees, and fruiting plants/fruit trees. What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Dislike those who destroy. Those who tear others down, whether it’s people or their ideas. Everyone deserves a voice. I dislike arrogance and ignorant pride. I don’t care for gluttony or greed. I’m not a fan of waste, whether time or resources. Life is short and valuable. Let’s not waste it. I like the freedom of being American and the stories and spirit of entrepreneurship that follow. I want integrity, compassion, and honesty. All of the things that make life beautiful and worth living. I like people, culture, and learning about new places, things, and ideas. I have always enjoyed exploring and immersing myself in something new, whether it’s a new food or some new piece of history. I love to experience it. I like nature, plants, animals, all things of the Earth. Music has permanently moved my soul, like the winds in the trees. It just feels natural to me. I’m not very good at playing or singing, but I love listening.
