Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Smith.

Imani Smith

Hi, Imani. I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, my grandmother owned a hair salon. I would always sit in the salon watching her do hair and see how beautiful her styles would always come out. She always made sure my hair was styled every time I saw her. At that moment, I loved keeping my hair styled. I picked up some tips and tricks and started making sure the hair of the people around me was also done. Before I learned my passion was hair, I thought I wanted to attend school as a psychologist, but I quickly realized that wasn’t my career goal. Soon, people outside my friends started asking me to do their hair, and it became more and more common. I understood this was my career goal. December 2023, I graduated from Kenneth Shuler Cosmetology School, and now I’m working in a salon doing what I love.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some struggles I had on the way were building my clientele at first. Promoting myself was a struggle because I’m not a big social media person. I’m also a big introvert, so meeting people and working that customer service was a big hump for me, but soon, I started networking with other beauty techs, and that soon broke my nerves.

Thanks for sharing that. So, tell us more about your work next.
I specialize in natural hair care, geology, and extension services. I am known for my luxury wig and extension services. My technical ability, communication ability, and ability to keep up with current trends set me apart from other stylists.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I want to make my clients feel at home and like they are getting the experience of a lifetime while getting their hair done. I feel like my chair should be in my comfort zone so that I can relax and enjoy that “Me” time that we all search for.
