Meet Rebecca Croft

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Croft.

Rebecca Croft

Hi Rebecca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I began taking drawing classes in 2000 and moved into painting classes in 2001.

I always wanted to be an artist, but I majored in International Business and French in undergraduate school and got an MBA 7 years later. It wasn’t until I was working part-time and being a full-time mom that I decided to pursue that passion. I was hooked after a few classes.

Art allows me to escape to a part of my mind that is otherwise always busy! It’s as good as a wonderful book or taking a vacation. I get a lot of pleasure out of creating and then finding new homes for my art. My skills as a marketing manager come in handy when marketing my art either online or in galleries or shows.

I am a member of the Mt. Pleasant Art Guild and show in the Perspective Gallery there, as well as a member of the Charleston Artist Guild. I show in the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery on East Bay Street in Charleston.

I also have a home studio and an Etsy store. My website is www.rebeccacroftstudios.com. I primarily paint the low country scenes now that I’ve relocated to the Charleston area, but I have painted from my travels all over the world as well as pet portraits and still lives. I love to paint en plein air around the area.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I began painting twenty-plus years ago, I started out very realistically just learning how to paint what I was looking at. As I’ve progressed through the years, my style has become very loose and impressionistic, and my color sense is very bright and happy. Most of my paintings have pink and purple in them.

I love to paint the light in nature, so landscapes are my favorites, especially the marsh areas, as they change throughout the year with the seasons. I painted and sold them in my Etsy store long before moving to the low country. I think my passion for this area came through in my paintings because I sold many more marsh paintings than any other genre. My heart was really here even though I had never lived south of Virginia.

While I love to spend time on the beach, I prefer looking at the marsh as it’s always so alive with color and all kinds of animals and sounds. It’s always changing. I never get tired of painting it. I would say I’m an impressionist landscape painter who also dabbles in other areas, like animals. I love to take workshops from painters I admire to learn new techniques.

What matters most to you?
Creating a piece that someone falls in love with is very satisfying. It’s so fun to get a commission and fulfill someone else’s dream. I would say creating the art is what matters most and spending time in the studio because it fulfills my creative energy in a way nothing else does.
