Check Out Rene Hutchisson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rene Hutchisson.

Rene Hutchisson

Rene, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a custom dressmaker for 25 years after graduating from The Fashion Institute in NY. A year and 1/2 ago I made a hat out of leftover fabric from pants I had just made and wore that hat downtown. A couple of women asked where I got my hat and that got me thinking. I LOVE fabric and creating things so I thought this could be fun. I sold my first hat 15 months ago and I’ve made about 700 hats since then. There is definitely a market for what I do!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a unique transition going from wedding dresses and pageant gowns to hats. I enjoyed selling my hats at local markets last year and now the tough part… I just opened a boutique in the Village of West Greenville, in the Flat Iron Building. Now I HAVE to sell hats to pay rent. I moved in last month so now is the time to let people know where I am, who I am, and what I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
R. Cappelli is the only Hat Bar of its kind. With over 300 fabrics in stock, customers are able to select 2 fabrics (all hats are reversible) and design their own unique hats. We are open Tuesday – Saturday for walk-ins but specialize in Girls Nights Out events or Team Building events which include wine, cheese, and lots of fun!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I really enjoy entertaining. So having friends over for drinks and dinner makes me very happy. Being able to provide an entertaining environment at work for people to show their artistic side and design their own hats definitely puts a smile on my face.
