Today, we’d like to introduce you to Anna Cate Brooks.
Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a hairstylist! I earned my cosmetology license while I was in high school, so this head start gave me the ability to start accepting clients even before I graduated in 2023.
In my junior year of high school, I was hired as an assistant/receptionist at Capello Salon and Suites. This opportunity helped me get my foot in the door and continue to learn outside of the classroom. I have loved every minute of working at Capello!
From my awesome coworkers to the wonderful clients, Capello has truly become my salon home for the foreseeable future! After working on the commission floor for nine months, in February of 2024, I became a booth renter! This means that I operate my own business located on the second floor of Capello. I absolutely love what I do and all of my amazing clients! I can’t wait to see what the future brings for my career!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I would say that there have definitely been some struggles. Being a hairstylist comes with building confidence in your work, learning new techniques, keeping up with the trends, and trying your absolute best to make every client happy.
Since nobody is perfect, you are bound to mess up.. and that’s okay! It is how you handle a situation that truly matters. I have to remind myself every day to be confident in who I am and the abilities that I have. When you love what you do, you are willing to go the extra mile to perfect your craft!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist in Greenville, SC! I love all things color! Blondes, brunettes, and reds are a few of my favorites! I am most proud of everything I have been able to accomplish at such a young age, and I also think that is something that sets me apart from others.
Since I am only 18, I feel like I am good at keeping up with the trends, helping clients look and feel young, and bringing a fun energy to the room!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
While I was in cosmetology school, I assisted three amazing stylists for about six months. I give credit to them for teaching me everything that I know and techniques that I use on my own clients.
For anyone who wants to become a hairstylist, I would suggest assisting for a few months before going on the floor! Doing this has served me so well! I gained so much confidence in myself as a stylist, and I would not be where I am today without their mentorship!
