Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jennifer Bishop.
Hi, Dr. Jennifer. I am so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve embraced various roles and responsibilities throughout my life, embodying the essence of entrepreneurship, authorship, faith leadership, motivational speaking, philanthropy, community advocacy, and political activism.
My journey as a women’s empowerment advocate and leadership development expert has been fueled by a desire to inspire and offer practical guidance to individuals and organizations striving to reach their aspirations.
My achievements in business, education, and non-profit sectors have been recognized through numerous accolades, positioning me as a distinguished national leader. I take pride in being associated with esteemed organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack & Jill of America, Inc., The Junior League of Columbia, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
In 2022, I was honored to be appointed by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., as Commissioner on The Commission of Presidential Scholars through the U.S. Department of Education. Before this, I served as a Commissioner on the Richland County Penny Tax Commission and currently hold the City of Columbia Commercial Revolving Loan Board Chairwoman position.
My commitment to literary endeavors led me to start my own publishing company, BishopSpeaks Publishing, and publish several impactful works aimed at both adults and children, including “Now Get Up and Go Be Great!” and my latest releases, “Next Is Now! Overcoming the Overdose of Doubt” and the accompanying workbook. I have also co-authored three children’s books from my Enter to Learn, Exit to Lead Series “Peyton’s First Day,” “I Don’t Know,” and “The Neat Meet.” The fourth book from the series, “Help Me Help You,” is set to be released in the Spring.
In addition to my literary pursuits, I co-founded the non-profit organization RARE Leaders, Inc., in 2022 with a vision of community transformation. Through initiatives like Souled Out Saturdays and The Bigger Picture Project, we empower leaders with the necessary tools for equitable economic empowerment and resource mobilization.
Education holds a special place in my heart, being a fourth-generation college graduate. I have a Bachelor of Arts in History (1998), a Master of Public Administration (2000) from Savannah State University, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership (2022) from Columbia International University.
I am married to Dr. Aaron Bishop, and we are blessed with a wonderful son. Through our shared values and endeavors, we strive to make a positive impact in our community and beyond.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The loss of my mother, who served as my guiding light, mentor, and closest confidante, profoundly impacted my life when I was just 21 years old. Her passing left an indelible void, reshaping my journey and perspective in ways I could never have anticipated. Despite the immense grief and sorrow from her absence, her legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering support inspires me each day. Though she may no longer be here with me physically, her spirit remains an enduring source of strength and guidance. I am forever grateful for her profound impact on shaping the person I am today.
Let’s switch gears and talk about your work. What should we know?
In addition to owning and operating BishopSpeaks, I proudly helm a diverse array of organizations that reflect my multifaceted passions and commitments. Among these endeavors, I own and operate Grace Academy Child Development Center, providing nurturing and educational environments for young minds to thrive and flourish, fostering a foundation for lifelong learning and growth. Additionally, I operate BishopSpeaks Publishing, a platform that amplifies diverse voices and empowers authors to share their stories and insights with the world. Through this endeavor, we strive to inspire, educate, and uplift readers while fostering a literary excellence and innovation culture. Furthermore, I am a co-founder and leader within RARE Leaders, Inc., an innovative non-profit dedicated to promoting community transformation through equitable economic empowerment and resource mobilization initiatives. Through initiatives such as Souled Out Saturdays and The Bigger Picture Project, we equip leaders with the knowledge and tools to effect meaningful change, driving progress and prosperity for all. Through these various ventures, I am privileged to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of individuals and communities, each organization serving as a testament to my enduring commitment to empowerment, education, and positive societal change.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The trajectory of my life journey is a testament to the unwavering support and love of countless individuals who have played instrumental roles in shaping my path. From the guidance of my parents and the wisdom imparted by my grandparents to the nurturing care of my aunts and uncles, their collective influence has provided the foundation upon which I stand today. Their sacrifices, encouragement, and belief in my potential have been the bedrock of my accomplishments, instilling the resilience and determination to pursue my dreams.
Yet, amidst this vast network of support, I am grateful for my husband’s love and unwavering support. His steadfast belief in my abilities, his unwavering encouragement, and his constant presence have driven my journey’s most significant milestones. His partnership has encouraged me to reach heights I never considered, and his support has been a continuous source of strength and inspiration, propelling me forward in times of triumph and adversity.
