Life & Work with Tonya Peterson of Sumter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Peterson.

Tonya Peterson

Hi Tonya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My photography journey all started way back in the disposable camera era. Since I was younger, my grandmother would ensure we took pictures on special holidays. Although I did not understand it then, once I got a little older, I realized that she was preserving memories. From that point, whenever the family would get together for holidays or birthday celebrations, I would show up with a disposable camera to capture the moments. I took some ugly and blurry photos, but I still have those photo albums today. Chaunise encouraged me to purchase my first digital camera; the rest is history. From disposable to digital, I became passionate about capturing memories, which grew into something bigger. My passion, My business.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. As I look back to the start of my journey, I struggle because I did not take the time to learn my camera thoroughly after pulling it out of the box. So because I did not learn my camera properly, it showed in my work. I also need help finding my niche and at least one or two main areas of photography that I want to be known for. There were also times when I reached out to other photographers unwilling to help. It was a bit discouraging, but it also pushed me to strive to do my research.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I offer a variety of services (portraits, events, weddings, birthdays, headshots); however, if I had to say what I specialize in, it would have to be portrait photography and event photography. Portrait photography allows me to use my imagination and ideas to transform a moment into something that will last a lifetime. I love the interaction I get from people when photographing events. One photograph is powerful enough to remind you of an event or detail and bring you right back to the feelings from that moment. I am most proud that I get to be myself, doing what I love, and I am not out here trying to mimic or be like other photographers. Besides knowing how to take a great photo and paying great attention to detail, what sets me apart is that I love people, my customer service skills are impeccable, and patience is vital.

Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
I am happiest when I know I have taken a mere idea that a client gave me and made it a reality. I can tell a story without words, which brings me so much joy. I take photos because doing so gives me satisfaction and nourishes and energizes me in many ways.
