Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Peaks.
Hi Katrina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Katrina Peaks, the owner of The Cake Obsession, located in Blythewood, SC. Baking has always been a passion of mine, but I never thought it would become a career. I stumbled upon the world of cake artistry when I made a Lego cake for my son’s 6th birthday. Little did I know that decision would change my life! I remember thinking, “How hard can it be?” Well, let me tell you, it was quite a challenge! But, after hours of trial and error, I had created my first “masterpiece” that impressed my son and all the other moms at the party! That was when I realized that baking and designing cakes was something I truly loved! After that, family and friends started requesting my creations for their celebrations. I began taking classes and watching tutorials to perfect my craft. I made countless cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, and with every new creation, my passion grew stronger! Eventually, The Twisted Baker was born and later transformed into The Cake Obsession. My goal has always been to create something that tastes amazing and looks like a work of art! I love collaborating with clients to bring their visions to life! It’s funny to think that a Lego cake would lead to a fulfilling career and successful business; after all, I went to college for a completely different career path (that’s a story for another time)! I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had and every cake I’ve made. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next!
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a business is a complex and demanding endeavor. Having the ability to persevere is an essential skill. It is necessary to keep pushing forward despite obstacles or challenges that come our way. The biggest challenge I experience as a small business owner is juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, from managing finances and operations to marketing and advertising and creating and delivering a quality product while providing excellent customer service. Another challenge is navigating the ever-changing landscape of marketing and advertising. This involves developing effective marketing strategies, creating compelling ad campaigns, and reaching the right target audience. It requires a deep understanding of consumer behavior, market trends, and the latest technologies and tools. In addition to these challenges, I must ensure that we provide a high-quality product and deliver exceptional customer service. This means constantly striving to improve our product, addressing customer concerns promptly and effectively, and exceeding their expectations. It can also be gratifying despite the many obstacles of running a business. It offers the opportunity to create something meaningful and to make a difference in people’s lives.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One way to find a mentor or network with others in your industry is to attend industry events, conferences, and seminars. These events provide an excellent opportunity to meet new people and learn from experienced professionals in your field. You can also join professional organizations or online communities related to your industry. These groups often have mentorship programs or networking events to help you connect with others and build relationships. Additionally, reaching out to people you admire or respect in your industry via email or LinkedIn is an excellent way to start a conversation and form a mentorship or networking relationship.
