Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyenne Beets.
Hi Cheyenne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since high school, I knew I loved studying the science of the brain and mind, eagerly devouring all books on the subject I possibly could in my spare time. I spent many years pursuing that path, getting my Bachelor’s in Psychology, then a Master’s in Counseling, with dedicated study as a Life Coach and a specialty in Crisis & Trauma. After getting my Master’s degree, I won a scholarship for a program to become a Board Certified Mental Health Coach, which I finished a year or so later. During this, I pursued several volunteer opportunities with the National Association for Suicide Prevention, National Eating Disorders Association, and National Alliance for Mental Illness. I volunteered with people living with cancer and their families and offered support to many people suffering from grief or abuse. In some ways, I was a typical psychology cliche- wanting to help others who had experienced trauma or disruptive situations. On the slip side, I also wanted to create something new, something greater. I suffered from a health condition that prevented me from doing certain things I love, and traditional medicine didn’t and couldn’t help me whereas aspects of holistic health and wellness had. I wanted to combine my many passions, knowledge, and experience into one mind/body/spirit approach, which I believe is necessary to truly achieve whole body harmony and wellness. I wanted to create a space of growth and healing for those who couldn’t find it elsewhere. Having always had an entrepreneur mind from a young age, starting my own business was a no-brainer. I have watched my dad run his karate school for years & my mum runs her own education program. These are where I feel my inspiration and driven attitude comes from. My brother started his own videography business also. I suppose it just runs in the family. We have an idea that doesn’t exist or we don’t have access to, so we make it happen. We are a family full of passion, all very close and supportive. I then spent a couple of years studying the laws and logistics and creating my marketing and social media platforms (a secret love of mine) and The Brain Coach, LLC was finally born. A new method to mental wellness and life coaching- clinical approaches by a board-certified professional, with all the benefits and flexibility of holistic practices. A space for clients to experience authenticity, resiliency, and healing. The Brain Coach LLC is a one-woman show- I am self-taught in all my digital aesthetics, content, media, and marketing materials, channeling my creative side consistently in addition to the logistics of running a business. It’s a lot of work, but I couldn’t be happier doing what I love.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It can be a challenging road to finding your niche, building a client base in what can often be a heavily saturated field, and breaking away from a traditional model and system. During the pandemic, it felt like everyone decided to become a coach. Even though mine is a board certification, coupled with a Master’s degree, I was up against everyone who had more followers on social media, more connections, or more spare time. I was an essential worker during the pandemic, so I had only my spare time to focus on building my business. In addition, while my methodology and approach make me unique, it is also a challenge to break apart from a traditional system rooted in their ways. I take an integrative approach, combining my clinical training in counseling with my more holistic training and interests. While it is a strength of my business and something that sets me apart, people are often afraid of what they don’t know. This was an obstacle I had to work to overcome.
Another obstacle occurred in my Freshman year of college when I took a General Psychology course that was taught by the Dean of Psychology at that University. Many students tended to fail his class. After exhausting all options to study more and in different ways in this specific class, I went to my professor for help and in short, was told I was not smart enough to be in psychology and I needed to find a different major. I was devastated- psychology was the only thing I envisioned for myself. I finished out the year then transferred schools, retook Gen Psych and aced it, along with scoring high in every psychology class since. I have had many professors tell me I was born to be in psychology. I am not telling this story to brag, but rather to tell you to never let anyone dull your shine. If it has been placed on your heart, charge full force towards your dream. That professor could have altered the entire trajectory of my life. Now, I get to stand here, owning my own business, board certified with a master’s degree. I might not ever be able to tell him to his face, but in my heart, I know I didn’t let him beat me. Here’s to the dreamers.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I appreciate that the pandemic has brought mental health to the forefront of people’s minds. It is now, and always should have been, a priority. Everything in our body operates from our mind. If we can not properly care for our minds, our bodies will no longer exist as we know it. I am so grateful that I have been allowed to help people learn how to prioritize their mind and mental health, and give them the tools to do so in a culture that is now acknowledging and accepting people’s need for that.
