Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Leech.
Hi Lindsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Based in Charleston, South Carolina, our family is lucky to spend most of the year outdoors. Our sons’ love for golf was the catalyst for this venture. When shopping for golf apparel, finding a happy medium between boring stripes and large, loud prints for the young man took a lot of work. I noticed most boys were often wearing oversized, untucked polos, with parents admitting to my struggles in finding better options. Add in a sensory processing disorder, and boy (no pun intended) was I on a mission to create designs that offered comfort and a tailored fit. If this story sounds familiar, you have come to the right place! Inspired by our sons, Palmer and Bear, the name “Bear the Palm” originates from Roman history when it was custom to present the victorious gladiator with a palm. The phrase can be what it means to you to “take the prize” or “be the winner.” For our family, the person who “bears the palm” is the one who is having the most fun!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is in my blood, and I am ready to do what it takes to bring Bear the Palm to families looking for these products! Working a full-time career, being a busy mom to two boys, working on my business, and getting my name out there can be challenging. I am learning as I go and love the challenges each day brings.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For starters, I am a Nurse Practitioner, so this fashion apparel field is somewhat new to me. I spent time in marketing internships while in college and utilized what I learned in my past life before venturing into healthcare. However, as both a mother and healthcare professional, I have used this experience to create apparel for young boys who struggle with symptoms of sensory processing disorder. My current products are soft, stretchy, easy to pull over the head, and tagless polos. The polos are also designed to be worn both tucked and untucked; as I noticed with young, active boys, a neatly tucked shirt can quickly become untucked! I also saw most of the prints in the market for juniors, especially in the athletic apparel world, were either plain stripes or loud and bold. I tried to create unique prints that children and moms would enjoy while still looking sharp on or off the course.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Charleston is a beautiful piece of paradise. As a native of the Northeast, once I moved here 12 years ago, I knew I would never look back. The southern hospitality, warm weather, and ability to be outdoors most months of the year make it a great place to live for families. We love being outdoors as much as possible, and Charleston has many fun events to look forward to each season.
