Today we’d like to introduce you to Hollywoodd Tomlin.
Can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up playing drums in church, that’s what really sparked my love for music. I started making beats when I was younger on my iPod at the time then moved to my iPhone still using Garage Band. I was always trying to get a computer but Ma Dukes never was able to get one for me … so I just kept using my phone until I got my first computer for college… then I was able to download Fruity Loops and start playing around with it. It wasn’t hard. I just had to learn the program FL shout-out to my brudda Ced. He taught me how to use it for real… once he taught me the basics, I took off and ran with it lol. After hearing the first person get on one of my beats I was like, mhmm I could really make something shake with this… But on the real staying consistent is what really got me here today, being persistent and dedicated even when I did not see any progress just knowing the goal that I was trying to accomplish motivated me.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Trying maneuver through all the b.s. that comes with this music has been challenging. You sometimes come across people that only do it because it looks good, everybody else doing it or it’s a quick bag. They really don’t be caring about the art… I mean that’s cool but it takes away from the value of the music. You also gotta watch out for scams or people who don’t mean you any good… trying to help but got a hidden agenda. After all of that you really just have to overcome yourself, try to block out all the doubt and negative thoughts because those can get to you easily especially if you aren’t seeing any support from people around you like your family and friends or it seemed like you ain’t making no progress… you just gotta stay locked in for real keep your eyes on the goal and just stand 10 toes on what you believe in cause once people start see the plan working they will become believers too!
Thanks, What should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Mhmm… I just executive produced two projects one with Isthatblue called “3022” EP and I also dropped a album with Luh 6ix called “Before Diamonds and Designer. We also dropped videos off both of those projects… “Drose”- Isthatblue & “Find out Sum”-Luh 6ix… Got a couple songs going crazy off both projects right now, so if you haven’t go check both out ! I’m really trying to start working with a lot more artists trying to create different sounds and be versatile I’m trying to make a hit for real. I’ve been working with a few artists from all over, especially my hometown! I been trying to think outside the box on the production side of things, so we will see where these next couple month takes me.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say try to move around, people can know your name but not your face so putting a name with a face helps people better connect you with your BRAND. You should also want to build genuine connections with people, that can really help you go a long way in life. Having a genuine relationship with somebody outside of the music or outside of business helps. Don’t be afraid to speak up when you outside moving around … you don’t know who you could meet or who you could be introduced to! Never know who knows who so one conversation could change everything! I think having a mentor is a plus, especially when you trying to learn the business side of music… The music comes easy lol, but knowing the business is where people fall short, don’t really have one right now but it would be cool to have one.
