Exploring Life & Business with Melinda Savage of House of Colour Greenville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Savage.

Hi Melinda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I graduated from the University of Georgia and, from there, spent more than 20 years in the financial services business, focused on recruiting and developing talent. I decided to step away in 2016 to take a break and spend more time with my husband and 3 young children. In 2017, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and underwent several surgeries and rounds of radiation. I gained a lot of weight through that process and was uncomfortable in my new body. One day while scrolling through social media, I saw something about “color analysis, “ and it intrigued me. I decided that when my surgeries and radiation were over, I would treat myself to a Colour Analysis session with House of Colour. There was one in Charleston (where my surgeon was located), and I thought it would be fun! Little did I know it would change my life! My Colour Analysis session showed me how to dress in colors that made me feel beautiful again! I walked out of that appointment transformed by what I’d learned about the power of wearing the right colors & the right makeup! I sat through 2 more sessions with my sister and sister-in-law and knew right then that the women of Upstate SC deserved to have this service locally. I knew it would be a dream come true to help women (and men) show up to their lives with intention & confidence! And it has been just that!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It has been a wonderful and sometimes bumpy road. When I opened my franchise, I took almost any requested appointment time because I wanted the business. This meant weekends and nights I could have spent with my family. I soon realized that I needed strong work/life boundaries, and even though I was nervous, I stopped seeing clients on the weekends. It has made a huge difference in my quality of life and helps renew my energy for weekdays in the studio! Also, the admin side of the business can be a lot. So I recently hired an assistant, which has freed me up to be in the studio with clients, my favorite place!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband, David, deserves much credit because he supported my dream from day one. When I approached him about buying the House of Colour Greenville franchise, he could see how much it meant to me & was immediately on board. As the business has grown, he has continued to be supportive in every way, including driving kids, making dinner, and rubbing my feet after a long day in the studio! My sister, Mandy, has also been a huge advocate. Her Colour Analysis transformed her, and she never tires of hearing my stories, testing out makeup, and seeing my before & after pictures. And, lastly, the women I went through Colour Training with are my go-to gals! We call ourselves “HOC8” and text 40-50 times daily in our group chat. We share the highs & lows of this business, give each other ideas, laugh our butts off, and encourage each other daily. I wouldn’t want to do this without them!
