Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Piscitelli.
Hi Karen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, I learned from a young age that discipline and hard work are the necessary ingredients for success. I spent many years working two jobs and founded my first company at age 27. My passion was marketing, with a focus on luxury lifestyle brands, publishing, and the maritime industry.
It was a stroke of serendipity that introduced me to the tourism industry. My dad passed away and we converted our family’s custom-built home into a vacation rental, there was a need to introduce guests to the many wonderful experiences available in the Blue Ridge mountains. And the wheels were set in motion.
It became my mission to bring together tour and activity operators with locals and visitors alike looking for something fun to do. Explorabout was born on the premise that collaborative partnerships create the most successful relationships.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a long road, but a satisfying journey. We’ve made adjustments to better reach our end goals. For example, our original name was Vacay Services, Inc. (which remains as a parent company), and created a better brand name that has been trademarked. We call ourselves Explorabout… because exploring is what life is all about.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would say that I’m known for my creativity and sense of passion. I have an eye for detail and a knack for interpreting what people crave. What sets me apart? I’ve been told that it’s my ability to attract the most amazing people.
My true calling is to shine the light and give a voice to the talent around me.

As I’ve built this business, I’ve also maintained my full-time job.
