Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Prioleau.
Hi Trevor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started with absolutely no knowledge of business – just ideas in my head. Through life, I learned to listen to others and understand what people wanted in the world. Many begged for original content & not content that was manipulated through the eyes of others, but authentic in the way it was presented from the visionary’s perspective. Being from St. Stephen, SC, we don’t have a lot of opportunities and aren’t exposed to much due to the demographics and economic position of our environment. Although that may be the case, the town has rich talent embedded within so many individuals that it often dies if not fostered in the appropriate way. That mindset was enough to move this vision forward. I learned from others. I listened to stories and positioned myself with some people I’d call: Greats. I was fortunate to do a summer camp with Google then transitioned to TRiO’s Upward Bound for Math & Science under the leadership of Mr. Antonio Robinson. Those experiences changed my life. I met people that shaped my possibilities of the world differently through dialogue and challenged my perspective of life. Those dialogues endowed wisdom on how I could maneuver through life to create something that was unique to me.
I originally started as a mentorship program in 2012 where I assisted, tutored, and encouraged individuals from low-income backgrounds to foster their academic and social skills. During the summer of 2016, I made it official by establishing Prodigy Productions – creating a space for innovators to express their ideas and visions with others in the world. Six years later, the vision has incubated and grown to become more than just an outlet – but a platform of self-reflection that offers authentic content to help individuals not only express themselves but to maneuver through life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road. It looks easy being celebrated but it’s even harder finding ways to motivate yourself to do new work that you don’t truly understand in the moment. Some often think the struggles are about health and getting the right amount of rest, but I’ve come to realize that it’s about the battle of the mind: Can I frame my mental to endure? Do you believe that realigning project goals and starting over require your mental to be flexible to changes? The truth is, you’ll never have the support of everyone because not everyone will believe in your work or vision. So, don’t treat yourself like everyone else. Believe in your work, your word, and value the time that you give things.
Another challenge is attaining success and practicing humility. Many lose their “common man” touch after achieving certain levels of success. I enjoy connecting with individuals because it shows others a new way of doing life – that they can “become” in life because they are familiar with someone who came from similar upbringings as they did. It’s a challenge being relatable with the double edge sword of being misunderstood or not always received.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Prodigy is a little bit of everything! It was intentionally built to be that way – to serve as an outlet for innovators. I specialize in photography, videography, web & graphic designs, and audio production. On top of those hats, I am a writer, author, artist, and assist others in small business development/management. The diversity of my business is what separates me from others since I don’t necessarily stick to one aspect when it comes to developing content. I embrace other ways to communicate feelings and ideas to the world while staying true to the initial vision. It’s art – it speaks for itself.
I’m most proud about my new book “Starting Over: Talks With My Father” which I released in March of 2022 after beating cancer. I challenged myself to be open about my journey and provide metaphors that could offer wisdom to anyone attempting to adopt a new mindset as they transition to new and unexpected phases of their life.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
People grow at their own rate, own pace, and in their own time. Don’t force relationships, business opportunities, or your vision on anyone. Be flexible and be open to changes. This vision is far from what I thought it would be, but I trusted God on this one. I’ve learned not to discount my own personal steps just because things did not move in the way or time that I might have wanted it to. With trusting my Creator with the plan, I must also trust Him with me and what He’s trying to do through my life for someone else.
