Conversations with Kingsley Waring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kingsley Waring.

Hi Kingsley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all begins with an idea. Turntable City is the brainchild of SC Hip Hop Pillar… DJ Kingpin-Villain Of Vinyl. As a founding member of the WUSC 90.5 FM Classic Underground Hip Hop radio show-Non-Stop Hip Hop (which aired 1996-2002), ground zero for Live South Carolina Hip Hop shows- Non-Stop Hip Hop Live (1998- 2012), and the groundbreaking World Hip Hop Family Day aka Love, Peace, & Hip Hop Music Festival (2012 – present-day), DJ Kingpin VOV has been a busy man. DeeJaying since his early years of high school and collecting records since even earlier, Turntable City was inevitable. Cutting his teeth in some of SC’s best record stores (Papa Jazz Record Shoppe, Manifest Disc & Tapes, and others), Vinyl has always been his muse. Turntable City began in 2015 with tons of records from years of collecting, local stores, record shows, record pools, garages, yard sales, estate sales, family/friends’ collections, and more. October 28, 2017, saw the opening of our storefront in the heart of Downtown Lexington. Definitely staying progressive, all the while maintaining the roots and culture of a record store, Turntable City is now a mainstay in the Lexington municipality. We just celebrated 4 great years, kicked off our 1st Annual Book Drive to celebrate Youth Literacy here locally and throughout the Midlands, and launched some fantastic endeavors that will definitely deserve their own posts. Our aim to improve the community of Lexington by making it progressive in all ways. Making sure that a landmark for determination stands as a testament to following your passion and putting in the work. Our motto is Vinyl, Records, Albums, & All In Between. This simply means that when you think about music (specifically Vinyl), we should always be your first choice. We are located at 202 A West Main Street-Lexington, SC 29072. @turntablecity on Facebook & Instagram. www.turntable-city.com #JustKeepSpinning

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
That’s like asking is Water wet? In the world of business, some days and nights are better than others but are you willing to keep walking through the rough patch to ensure your goals are accomplished. Some current struggles are keeping up with the demand for newer records. We have a few great distributors who help us out, but we also are dealing with a world short on supplies since Covid-19, meaning that a lot of our inventory takes longer than we’d hope to reach our crates. Our biggest struggle now is expansion. We are looking to hire in the near future to allow for greater expansion, mobility, and longer store hours, but this is a process. We are seeking driven, music-loving, music learning, customer & caring-centric individuals. If interested, please visit www.turntable-city.com and check out our Contact US page to place your application in our system. Finally, business is gonna be tough, but those rewards are gonna be tougher not to achieve.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Turntable City’s foundation begins where Kingsley Waring also known as DJ Kingpin-Villain of Vinyl’s journey detours a little. Definitely still active in the world of SC live music, DJ Kingpin VOV is always available for your event. If you are looking to secure a date and/or book DJ Kingpin VOV, be sure to visit www.djkingpinvov.com. Check out all of his mixtapes, instrumental beat tapes, and more of his latest on my website, and definitely follow me on social media (@djkingpinvov everywhere).

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Outside of my family. What truly makes me happy is helping people find their happy through music. Whether deejaying a party, creating a custom mixtape, helping them find the perfect record for a present, or even talking about music with customers, my happy place is in the universe of music. Also, a couple million dollars to free up my time never hurts too :).
