Today we’d like to introduce you to Deejay Rubin.
Hi deejay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, music has always been a natural part of who I am. My musical journey began in elementary school, where I developed an interest in reading sheet music and joined the school chorus. As I progressed into middle school, my passion for music continued to grow when I joined the school band and discovered my love for percussion. By high school, I had become a member of the marching band, specializing in the tenor drums.
Little did I know, those early experiences would lay the foundation for what would eventually become my career as a professional DJ. What started as a childhood passion for rhythm, sound, and musical expression evolved into a lifelong love for entertaining and connecting with people through music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey to becoming an established DJ in Charleston and throughout South Carolina has not always been a smooth road. Like most careers, it has come with its fair share of challenges, requiring patience, persistence, dedication, and a willingness to continuously prove myself.
One of the biggest challenges early on was building my name and establishing a reputation in a competitive industry. I had to gradually put myself out there, create opportunities, and allow my talent and work ethic to speak for themselves. In the beginning, much of my recognition came through word of mouth. People who knew me recognized my skills behind the turntables and began recommending me to their friends, families, and colleagues. Those personal connections eventually turned into clients, and those clients helped open doors to new opportunities.
Over the years, I’ve learned that talent alone isn’t enough. You have to be consistent, professional, adaptable, and willing to build genuine relationships. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and every opportunity isn’t guaranteed. However, each challenge has helped shape me into the DJ and entertainer I am today. What started with a few people believing in my abilities has gradually grown into a career built on passion, perseverance, and the support of my community.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a professional DJ, entertainer, and music enthusiast, I’ve spent more than 15 years building a career centered around my passion for music and bringing people together. Known professionally as DEEJAYRUBIN, I specialize in creating memorable musical experiences that go beyond simply playing records. My goal has always been to create an atmosphere where people can connect, celebrate, and enjoy the power of music.
My musical background began long before I stepped behind the turntables. From reading sheet music and singing in the school chorus to playing percussion in middle school and tenor drums in my high school marching band, music has always been a major part of my life. Those early experiences helped develop my understanding of rhythm, timing, musical arrangements, and the importance of connecting with an audience.
What makes me unique as a DJ is my versatility and ability to read a room. I don’t believe in limiting myself to one particular genre. My musical knowledge spans R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Afrobeats, Latin, Pop, Country, Southern Soul, and more. Whether I’m performing at a wedding, corporate event, cultural celebration, festival, or private gathering, I take pride in understanding the audience and creating a soundtrack that complements the occasion.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the reputation I’ve built through consistency, professionalism, and genuine relationships. What began with word-of-mouth recommendations has grown into opportunities to perform for diverse audiences and collaborate with organizations, businesses, and fellow creatives.
I believe what truly sets me apart is that I approach DJing as both an art form and a responsibility. It’s not just about playing the most popular songs; it’s about knowing when to play them, how to transition between musical styles, and how to create moments that people will remember long after an event has ended.
At the heart of everything I do is a simple philosophy: Music is universal, and the right soundtrack can bring people from all walks of life together. That’s what I strive to accomplish every time I step behind the turntables.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my faith, family, genuine relationships, and being able to make a positive impact on the lives of others. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand that success isn’t measured solely by accomplishments, recognition, or financial gain, but by the relationships we build, the lives we touch, and the legacy we leave behind.
Family has always been an important part of my foundation. It’s where I learned the importance of love, respect, hard work, and staying grounded. My faith continues to guide me through life’s challenges, reminding me to remain humble, grateful, and intentional about the person I’m becoming.
Music is also a significant part of what matters to me because it gives me an opportunity to bring people together. As a DJ, I’ve learned that music is much bigger than entertainment. It creates connections, brings back memories, celebrates cultures, and sometimes provides comfort when words simply aren’t enough. Knowing that I can contribute to someone’s happiness or create a moment they’ll remember for years is something I never take for granted.
Most importantly, I value authenticity, peace, personal growth, and treating people with kindness and respect. I believe how you make people feel is just as important as what you accomplish in life.
At the end of the day, I don’t just want to be remembered for the music I played or the events I’ve performed at. I want to be remembered for my character, the way I treated people, and the positive impact I made along the way.
