Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Rain of Balloons With A Twist SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rain.

Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I spent a few years practicing and experimenting with balloon design before I decided to turn something I loved into a business. I enjoyed discovering how balloons could transform a space and create something people remembered. Once I felt confident in my skills, I officially launched Balloons With A Twist SC in January 2026.

I’m especially drawn to clean, modern designs and finding creative ways to incorporate a company’s brand or theme into an installation. I also enjoy the challenge of creating custom pieces that are a little different from the usual balloon décor.

I’m based in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, and I’m growing my business throughout York County and the Greater Charlotte area. I’m excited to connect with more local businesses and help them celebrate milestones, open new locations, and create memorable experiences for their customers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business has definitely been a learning experience. There’s a lot more to it than the creative side. I’m handling everything from marketing and invoices to managing my website, all while working to grow my skills and build the business.

My long career in HR has helped more than I expected. I’m used to working with people, communicating, staying organized, and figuring things out when challenges come up.

Since launching in January 2026, one of my biggest challenges has been getting the word out and helping people see what’s possible with modern balloon décor. I’m working to build relationships with local businesses and event planners, and I know that takes time. Every project and new connection is a step forward, and I’m enjoying the process of turning something I love into a business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Balloons With A Twist SC?
Balloons With A Twist SC is based in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, and serves York County and the Greater Charlotte area. I create modern balloon décor for corporate events, business celebrations, grand openings, and private parties.

One of my favorite parts of this work is taking a client’s idea and figuring out how to bring it to life in a creative way. Recently, I created a custom balloon mouth sculpture for a dental office event. It was a fun project because it went beyond traditional balloon décor and tied directly into the client’s profession. I love finding ways to make a design feel personal and relevant to the event.

For businesses, balloon décor can do more than dress up a space. It can help create a welcoming first impression, bring a company’s brand into the event, and give guests something memorable to see and photograph.

I’m proud of the care I put into each project and the relationships I’m beginning to build in the community. Because I’m a small business, clients work directly with me throughout the process. I want to understand what they’re trying to accomplish and create something that fits their vision.

Whether a business is opening a new location, celebrating an anniversary, hosting a company event, or welcoming customers to a special occasion, I’d love to help make that moment stand out.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I haven’t had a traditional mentor in the balloon industry. I’ve learned a lot through the online balloon community, studying tutorials and learning from experienced decorators who share their techniques. There’s always something new to learn, and I’m looking forward to attending the Twist & Shout balloon convention in 2027 to learn directly from industry professionals.

When it comes to networking, I think building genuine relationships matters more than simply handing out business cards. My background in HR has taught me a lot about connecting with people, and I’ve found that some of the best connections happen naturally through shared interests and being involved in the community.

Whether I’m enjoying live music, attending a community dance, or volunteering, I enjoy getting to know people and learning about what they do. Those relationships are valuable in business and in life, and I’d rather build a genuine connection than make a contact just for the sake of networking.
