Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Boscia.
Hi Patricia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Patricia Boscia. I was born and raised in Italy, but in my early twenties, I moved to the United States, where my extended family resides.I love this country; it has given me vast opportunities to pursue my career goals in academia and to grow intellectually and personally. But the core of my identity will always be anchored to my Italian roots. And so, when personal circumstances led me to early retirement from my University teaching, I instinctively turned to my cultural background in my search for a new reference point, a novel social and personal identity. My baking started in the context of this personal search. It started as a pastime, a way of occupying my days. But as I tried new Italian recipes and read about their ancient origins and studied the socio-historical context that gives them meaning, I discovered a fascinating world of traditional and modern Italian pastry culture, a culture that I want to share as an integral part of my baking endeavor. Food is much more than consumption; it is deeply cultural, especially so in such a diverse and rich country like Italy. At my baking workshops, I always discuss the cultural meaning of Italian desserts and witness the interest it raises among my attendees. In my baking, I always strive to maintain the authentic flavor of Italian desserts, and my customers’ appreciation and enjoyment give meaning to my baking endeavor.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have not experienced real challenges in creating and developing my baking business. Probably just in the beginning, due to the relative unfamiliarity of my Italian desserts with many South Carolinians at the farmers’ market, for instance. But this was a temporary phase, and I am now blessed with the enthusiastic reception of a large number of customers.
What makes you happy?
I am happy when what I do has the best resolve I can hope for. Whether in my personal or professional goals, I work hard, with dedication and a strong ethical sense, and I feel so grateful and happy when the outcomes are rewarding!
