Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Grant.
Hi Richard, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After 35+ years in Chicago my wife and I moved to HHI, about 9yrs ago. In Chicago I spent many years in the restaurant industry and almost a decade at an art gallery. After moving to HHI I tried to become part of the arts community. As I became more active in said community I slowly started trying to give back. I realized making art and helping others to make, and show, their art was not only something I enjoyed but was also good at.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been fairly smooth. You need to build contacts and relationships. There are always lots of ideas, the hard part is trying to figure out which ones are doable, and accepting when they don’t always go the way you want
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Primarily I’m a painter. I use acrylics and do all different sizes. My work tends to be abstracts grounded in reality, with lots of color.
As far as what I’m most known for, a sumi inspired turtle. Came up with it a few years ago. Now I do a lot with Sea Turtle Patrol HHI, fundraising and such. I also make turtle magnets that I put in the free art boxes around the island as well as give them out at various community events.
What matters most to you?
Giving back, taking care of where I live, encouraging young artists, giving artists the opportunities to share their art they might otherwise not have.
It’s all important because it’s making sure the next generation has an understanding of art, environmet, ecology and it’s importance in a healthy life. Also, by giving back hopefully you encourage others to do the same.
