Meet Free of South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Free.

Hi Free, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a child singing in the choir at church, then the choir at school. I did band and dance team, everything. Then as a teenager I experienced homelessness for the first time. I lived at a college dorm with some friends before I even graduated high school. But after graduation things really started to change. I moved Atlanta for photography school and started writing songs for money. I sold my first song for $50 and learned to take it more seriously.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has absolutely not been smooth. One struggle has been maintaining the mindset of an artist in a society where artists don’t necessarily make money. So survival mode versus the certainty of a job. It will conflict if I have a show or I have an opportunity, do I reject my heart and go the other way?
It’s deciding what’s important, how to prioritize my time and what I do for my progression.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in translation. If anything was my special power , it would be the ability to translate what I comprehend in music into words that form a song. I’m able to say what the music says.

What are you most known for?
I think I’m most known for my understanding of music. Even though people don’t understand the process, they understand that I understand. No matter the genre.
l’ve been asked to do everything from gospel to country, anything. I’m known to be able to translate the music beyond a genre.

What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of my ability to maintain frequency. There’s so much influence from the outside when it comes to this industry, when it comes to sound. I’ve created a way to evolve with cadence and sound while maintaining my frequency so I can continue to elevate without having to conform.

What sets you apart from others?

I think what sets me apart from others who are doing music is the fact that I care about what I’m doing with the music. I do it with absolute integrity. I know what it feels like to not have much to depend on. When somebody says they’re gonna do something, or wants to do something, or needs something, and then somebody says they’ll provide that thing, it’s important to keep your word. That’s how I conduct myself as an artist.

What were you like growing up?
What were you like growing up?

Very quiet, very to myself. I liked to explore, I was adventurous. And I was always working.

what were your interests?

Mainly performance art. Dancing, photography, acting, that type of thing. I wanted to be on stage.
I wanted to perform. I knew that. And I wanted to travel and to document it
