Today we’d like to introduce you to LaSeaun Crawford.
Hi LaSeaun, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the beauty industry started long before I ever imagined owning a salon or educating other locticians. It all began at a sleepover when I was about eight years old. I was sitting on the floor braiding a Barbie doll’s hair when the other girls noticed what I was doing and asked if I could braid theirs too. That simple moment sparked something in me that would eventually become my life’s work.
From that day on, I became fascinated with hair. By the age of eight, I had my very first “clients,” creating braided styles for friends and family. As I grew, so did my skills. Braids evolved into sew-ins, sew-ins evolved into quick weaves, and eventually I discovered my true passion—locs. One of the greatest blessings of this journey is that I still serve some of the very same clients who trusted me all those years ago.
In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I walked away from my career as a mental health professional and took a chance on myself by becoming a full-time Loctician. Leaving the security of my profession was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but it was also one of the best. I don’t regret it for a second.
Although my educational background is in psychology and mental health, entrepreneurship has always been part of who I am. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and hairstylists, so I’ve witnessed firsthand what can be built through faith, dedication, and consistency.
Today, my business has grown into so much more than I ever imagined. In addition to serving clients through specialized loc services, I also provide hair loss treatment solutions for individuals with locs. I created LOYL Beauty, a hair care collection designed specifically for the health and maintenance of locs, and I founded LOYL Academy, where I educate aspiring and experienced locticians in the art and science of locs through courses in loc mastery, loc extensions, restoration techniques, and more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to success has been anything but easy. As a solo entrepreneur, I carry the responsibility of every aspect of my business. Every decision, every challenge, and every success ultimately rests on my shoulders. There have even been seasons where I was forced to temporarily close my business due to personal health concerns—three times within a single year. Those experiences tested my resilience, but they also strengthened my determination.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is to approach every client interaction as an opportunity to learn and grow. If a client is dissatisfied or a service doesn’t go as planned, I don’t take it personally. Instead, I take time to evaluate the situation, reflect on what could have been done differently, and seek solutions that allow me to continually improve. Growth requires humility, and I’ve learned that every experience has something to teach me.
Ironically, my biggest challenge has never been my business—it has been myself. While I am driven to achieve the goals I set and have intentionally built businesses with structure and purpose, there have been times when self-doubt and the fear of my own potential have stood in my way. Learning to trust myself has been just as important as learning my craft.
This journey hasn’t always been easy. There have been sacrifices, setbacks, and moments that tested my faith. But every challenge has been worth it. Watching lives change, restoring confidence, educating others, and building a legacy has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And I’m just getting started.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What sets me apart is my commitment to integrity, education, and truly understanding the “why” behind every client’s hair. I don’t believe in simply providing a service—I believe in providing solutions. Every client who sits in my chair receives an individualized assessment because no two heads of hair are the same. I take the time to educate my clients so they leave with not only healthier locs, but also a better understanding of how to care for them.
What I do best is solving problems. Whether it’s restoring damaged locs, treating hair loss in individuals with locs, creating seamless loc extensions, or helping clients begin their loc journey with confidence, I enjoy taking on the cases that others often shy away from. I love the challenge of developing a plan that helps my clients achieve long-term results while preserving the health and integrity of their hair.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the awards I’ve received or the business I’ve built—it’s the impact I’ve had on people. I’m proud that my clients trust me, that many have remained with me for years, and that I’ve been able to restore not only their hair, but their confidence. I’m equally proud of LOYL Academy, where I’ve had the privilege of educating locticians and helping them build successful careers rooted in knowledge, professionalism, and excellence.
At the end of the day, I want my legacy to be bigger than beautiful locs. I want to be remembered as someone who educated with honesty, served with integrity, and left every person who crossed my path better than when they found me.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
For me, happiness is knowing that I’ve helped someone—even if it’s through a simple consultation or taking the time to respond thoughtfully to a message online. I’m happiest when my clients look in the mirror and smile, not simply because their locs look beautiful, but because their confidence has been restored and they see themselves differently.
Happiness is also found in the quiet moments. After a long day of serving others, I cherish coming home to my husband and our two dogs. Those moments remind me of what truly matters.
Above all, my greatest source of joy comes from my faith. Time and time again, the Lord has proven His Word to be true: “Your gift will make room for you.” Every opportunity, every client, every lesson, and every blessing is a reminder that He has never failed me. That’s the kind of happiness that isn’t based on circumstances—it’s rooted in purpose, gratitude, and knowing that I’m walking in the calling God has placed on my life.
