Today we’d like to introduce you to Nivek Simon.
Hi Nivek, thanks for joining us today. Weβd love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Iβm Nivek, but most people know me as Vek (Veek). Iβm a Charleston, South Carolina nativeβstraight out of the 843 π΄. Iβm a photographer and model, and Iβve been building my craft for years.
Coming from the Deep South, Iβve always wanted my work to represent more than just a photo. I want it to tell stories, highlight the people, and showcase the style and creativity that exists in Charleston. Being Gullah Geechee is a privilege that most folks ainβt gonna see, itβs culture at its finest. But in the best way. My goal is to bring a fresh perspective while staying true to where Iβm from. Every shoot is another step in my journey as a creative, building a legacy that reflects my city, my culture, and my vision.
Would you say itβs been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges youβve faced along the way?
My journey has been anything but easy, but every obstacle has shaped the person I am today. Growing up in an abusive household, constantly relocating, and struggling with self-acceptance taught me resilience long before I understood its value. My environment didnβt nurture my confidence or encourage my artistic ambitions, and nothing was ever handed to me. As a Black boy in America, I learned early that I would have to find my own voice and create my own opportunities.
What once made me feel unseen and what others tried to make me ashamed of became the very foundation of my expression. Instead of letting those experiences define my limits, I transformed them into my art. Modeling became more than a careerβit became a way to reclaim my identity, celebrate my individuality, and show others that pain can be turned into purpose. Every challenge Iβve faced has strengthened my belief that our greatest obstacles can become our greatest source of power. Coming from where I from.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the core of it all, I just love to create. Whether Iβm modeling, behind the camera as a photographer, or directing a creative vision, my goal is always the same: to tell stories that feel authentic and leave an impact. My work centers around lifestyle, portrait, and studio photography, drawing inspiration from the culture, people, and experiences that shaped me.
One of the accomplishments Iβm most proud of is making my runway debut in Highest in the Roomβs La Biblioteca fashion show. It was a defining moment that reminded me how far Iβve come and affirmed that I belong in these spaces. Iβm equally proud of my editorial backdrop series, where Iβve had the opportunity to showcase Charlestonβs emerging talent and create images that celebrate individuality and community.
What sets me apart is my versatility. I donβt believe in staying confined to one lane. I can step in front of the camera, work behind it, or build the creative vision from the ground up. More importantly, I create from a place of lived experience. Everything I make is rooted in authenticity, resilience, and a desire to inspire others to embrace what makes them different instead of hiding from it.
Are there any important lessons youβve learned that you can share with us?
Iβd rather regret being embarrassed for trying than regret never trying at all.
