Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Gallagher.
Hi Annie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and moved to Charleston in 2013 to attend the College of Charleston. I always knew I wanted a creative career, and after graduating, I took a leap and started Annie Gallagher Interiors when I was just 23 years old.
In the beginning, I was doing everything myself, building the business from the ground up one client at a time. Over the years, the company has grown into a luxury residential interior design studio specializing in full service interior work. I love being involved early in the design process, helping clients make thoughtful decisions about everything from cabinetry and millwork to lighting, plumbing, finishes, and furnishings. I believe great design isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces, it’s about creating homes that feel deeply personal and stand the test of time.
Today, I have an incredible small but mighty team and we are in the process of renovating a historic building in downtown Charleston that will become our new design studio and showroom. Looking back, the biggest lesson has been that building a business takes patience, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning. Every challenge has shaped not only my company but also the way I approach both design and entrepreneurship.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I started my business at 23 with very little experience running a company, so I had to learn almost everything through trial and error. Interior design is a creative profession, but it’s also a business that requires project management, accounting, contracts, procurement, client communication, and problem-solving every single day.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning to set boundaries and create systems that protect both my clients and my business. As my projects became larger and more complex, I realized that clear expectations, strong contracts, and good communication are just as important as good design.
Like many small business owners, I’ve also had to navigate economic uncertainty, supply chain delays, rising costs, and the many unexpected challenges that come with construction projects. Every obstacle has pushed me to become more adaptable and proactive.
Looking back, I’m grateful for those experiences because they’ve made me a better designer, a stronger business owner, and a better advocate for my clients. I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding challenges, it’s about continuing to grow through them.
We’ve been impressed with Annie Gallagher Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Annie Gallagher Interiors is a full-service luxury residential design studio based in Charleston, South Carolina, specializing in custom homes, renovations, and thoughtfully curated interiors. My favorite projects begin long before furniture is selected, partnering with clients, architects, and builders to guide every design decision from cabinetry, millwork, and lighting to plumbing, flooring, and furnishings.
I believe the best homes are timeless rather than trend-driven. My goal is to create collected interiors that feel personal to the people who live in them, incorporating color, pattern, natural materials, and custom details that tell their story.
What sets my firm apart is the level of involvement throughout the design process. By coming on board early, I help clients avoid costly mistakes and ensure every decision works together cohesively. I love collaborating with talented local artisans, builders, and craftspeople to create homes that are as functional as they are beautiful.
More than anything, I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Designing a home is an incredibly personal process, and it’s a privilege to help families create spaces they’ll enjoy for years to come. As the firm continues to grow, I’m excited to be renovating a historic building in Charleston that will become our new design studio and showroom.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating authentic, livable spaces that truly reflect the people who call them home. I believe the best interiors aren’t driven by trends. They’re thoughtful, timeless, and designed to be lived in for years to come.
I also value the relationships that make every project possible. Great design comes from collaboration, trust, and working alongside talented clients, builders, architects, and artisans who all share the same commitment to quality.
At the end of the day, success isn’t measured by beautiful photos. It’s knowing we’ve created a home where families can gather, grow, and make lasting memories.
