Inspiring Conversations with Ava Hudson of MYMEDI-PAL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ava Hudson.

Hi Ava, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Throughout my career as a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, I had the privilege of caring for patients through some of life’s most challenging moments. While providing medical care, I noticed a common pattern—many patients left appointments still feeling overwhelmed, confused, or unsure about what to do next.

Even when excellent medical care was provided, patients and caregivers often struggled to understand diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, follow-up recommendations, or how to navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system. I realized that what happens between healthcare visits can be just as important as what happens during the appointment itself. I wanted to create a resource that helps bridge that gap, giving patients and caregivers greater confidence long after they leave the exam room.

That realization inspired me to create MYMEDI-PAL, a physician-founded healthcare advocacy and education business dedicated to helping patients and caregivers better understand healthcare information, prepare for appointments, and confidently navigate their healthcare journey. My goal has never been to replace the care provided by physicians or other healthcare professionals, but rather to complement it by providing education, guidance, and support that empowers people to make informed healthcare decisions.

Starting MYMEDI-PAL has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my career. Transitioning from practicing medicine to building a business has required me to develop an entirely new set of skills—from marketing and networking to entrepreneurship and business development. Along the way, I’ve been encouraged by the relationships I’ve built with healthcare professionals and community organizations who share the same passion for helping patients and caregivers.

Today, my mission remains simple: to help patients and caregivers better understand their health and what to do next—because what happens between visits matters most.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has reinforced why MYMEDI-PAL is needed. One of the biggest hurdles has been introducing a service that many people don’t realize exists. While patients often understand the roles of physicians, nurses, or case managers, they may not realize there are healthcare advocacy services dedicated to helping them understand medical information and navigate the healthcare system between visits.

Building awareness has taken time and has required a great deal of networking, relationship-building, and community education. I’ve learned that before people can appreciate the value of MYMEDI-PAL, they first need to understand the problem it solves. Every conversation with patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community organizations has helped me better communicate that mission.

Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also had to step outside my comfort zone. As a physician, my focus was always on caring for patients. Building a business meant learning marketing, branding, networking, and entrepreneurship—skills I had never formally trained for. While challenging, that journey has been incredibly rewarding and has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally.

Looking back, I see each challenge as an opportunity to refine my message, build meaningful partnerships, and continue creating a resource that helps patients and caregivers feel more informed, confident, and supported.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about MYMEDI-PAL?
MYMEDI-PAL is a physician-founded healthcare advocacy and education business created to help bridge the gap between healthcare visits. We help patients and caregivers better understand healthcare information, prepare for appointments, and feel more confident about what comes next. Rather than providing medical care, MYMEDI-PAL complements the care provided by physicians and other healthcare professionals by offering education, guidance, and advocacy that empowers people to make informed healthcare decisions.

We work with individuals and families who may be managing a new diagnosis, living with a chronic condition, coordinating care among multiple specialists, caring for an aging loved one, or simply feeling overwhelmed after a medical visit. Our goal is to help people better understand what’s happening with their health, organize important information, prepare meaningful questions, and navigate the healthcare system with greater confidence.

I think what makes MYMEDI-PAL different is that it’s built on both medical knowledge and real-world experience. As a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, I’ve spent years explaining complex medical information to patients and families. One of the things I’ve always enjoyed most is helping people understand what’s happening in a way that makes sense to them. That same approach is the foundation of MYMEDI-PAL. I want people to leave feeling more informed, more prepared, and more confident than they did before we met.

What I’m most proud of is creating a business that puts education and empowerment first. Every conversation with a patient, caregiver, healthcare professional, or community organization reminds me that people don’t just need access to healthcare—they need help understanding it. Knowing that someone feels less overwhelmed and more confident because of the support they received is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never considered myself someone who takes unnecessary risks, but I do believe some risks are worth taking when they’re grounded in purpose. Starting MYMEDI-PAL was certainly one of those risks.

After years of practicing medicine, I chose to step away from the traditional path to build something I believed was missing in healthcare. There wasn’t a roadmap for creating a physician-founded healthcare advocacy business, and there was no guarantee that patients or healthcare professionals would immediately understand the value of the service. That uncertainty was definitely intimidating.

Building MYMEDI-PAL has required investing my own time, resources, and energy while learning an entirely different side of healthcare—marketing, networking, branding, and entrepreneurship. I’ve also learned that building trust and educating people about a new type of service doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistency, patience, and a willingness to keep showing up, even when progress isn’t always immediate.

Looking back, I don’t see those challenges as reasons not to take the risk. Instead, they’ve reinforced that meaningful change often begins with someone willing to step outside their comfort zone. Every patient, caregiver, or referral partner who tells me they finally understand where MYMEDI-PAL fits reminds me why taking that leap was worth it.
