Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcel Wright.
Hi Marcel , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started braiding hair at the age of 12. Styling hair for my family, friends and classmates became my source of income in middle school up until now. When I graduated high school in May of 2003, I attended cosmetology school for maybe 6 months. I was battling depression from losing my boyfriend to a crossfire my senior year. I went back to a private cosmetology school and quit because I didn’t have the funds to pay. Tried another cosmetology school and quit because It was hard working full time and trying to go to school and being a single parent. It wasn’t until I decided to quit the job and attend school full time, despite any challenges that came my way, that I finished cosmetology and graduated with my diploma and became a Licensed Cosmetologist in January of 2017. I am now currently a cosmetologist for 10 years now and I am also a school bus driver as well. I have just enough client tell to provide for me and my son, to be able to attend all his games and any school functions. Now I am the proud parent of a high Graduate!!!! Now he’s headed to trade school for HVAC! Being a cosmetologist has definitely been my vehicle for my mission.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride at all. It was always a struggle trying to work a full time job, while in school or either having a baby sitter or the finances became overwhelming. I can remember when I had decided to quit the job and attend school full time so I could finish and I owe on my car payment. I saw a repo truck riding around in the school parking lot and I was so afraid that they came to pick my car up. I told my dean Mrs brown what was going on, and she was willing to pay my car payment for me but we were able to make a payment arrangement with the finance company
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work with a lot of clients that has alopecia. So I have clients that are very sensitive about being around others when getting their hair style. I’m a stylist that never double books. When you have an appointment with me that’s our one on one time. No one around, just music and conversations. It makes the clients feel relax and comfortable. I am known for pixie cut quick weaves. If you have long hair and wanna know how it feels to have short hair I can provide that service without cutting your natural hair. If you have alopecia I can make it look like it’s your natural hair. I am proud when I’m at the doctors office or walk in the beauty supply store and someone recognize me from Facebook or recognize my name, that makes me feel like I’m doing a great job.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I am also an author. I publish a book called “The Journal of a Fatherless Child” in June of 2019.
