Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Reid.
Hi Ebony, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a little girl I always had a heart for women and children, I’d say as a child I wanted to be an OBGYN Dr. not knowing that life would take and give me various turns why I chose not to be a Dr. throughout life I was known to be the girl who helped out withbthe children and babysit in church, or just in my community, I also was the girl in school that when my friends would get pregnant and have babies I was there supporting them and giving advice to help them, at this time of course I didn’t know I was doing doula work, but to look back on how many of my peers trusted me and really took after the advice I gave them, doula work was always meant for me. In 2018/2019 after supporting two friends and a mentee in college with there babies I begin to take doula work more serious. I saw how many women where being mistreated, dying under the birth rate, and most of all not having aliquot support and education while in their childbearing years and I said enough is enough I need to step in and help my community. As I worked in birthwork along side my 9-5 I helped families and mothers navigate proper birth education, breastfeeding and lactation, nutrition for both mom and babies and even knowing birth rights while in the hospital system. in 2024 after I had my son and a successful unassisted home birth I decided it was time for me to get certified and open more doors to assisting other families.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whewww I wish I could say this has been a smooth road and it was all laid out for me, but being honest I’m still figuring it out. Now that I am in full entrepreneurship (mompreneur), I feel like I’m balancing even more but I make do with what I can.
When I first started not only was I just graduating from college and trying to start my career, but I was getting married and relocating to the Greenville area. I balanced for almost 3 years going back and forth trying to have clients both in GA and SC. that became overwhelming and although people where interested in doula’s it seemed like everyone I was getting either didn’t have the means to pay or they waited to the last minute and I couldn’t support them. Since October 2025 I have been solely working as a birth worker and I am back at what feels like square one. In order to maintain and keep business I am now offering birth education classes, comfort measure classes, doing virtual services and lactation consultations not just to stay a float financially but to also get my name out in the community and serve families who need just a little love during the happiest time of there lives.
I often wish I had a blueprint or a mentor that could mold me and allow me to walk beside them, however I have learned that everyones walk in birthwork is different and once you learn what it is to be a doula you have to create your own lane in your niche.
