Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Williams.
Hi Jay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jay Williams, and I’m a drummer and creative based around the Charlotte area. Music became something much deeper for me during my teenage years when I started serving full-time on my church’s worship team. What started as simply playing drums quickly became a genuine passion and calling. Around that same time, I began working with a band called The Maggie Valley Band, which exposed me to traveling, performing in different cities, and seeing new sides of music and creativity. That experience helped me realize this wasn’t just something I enjoyed, it was something I felt God had placed me in.
Since then, I’ve continued growing through live performance, collaboration, touring, and mentoring younger musicians. One of the biggest moments for me was going on tour across the country and waking up every day grateful that I was truly getting to live through music. At the same time, teaching and mentoring has reminded me that what I do carries impact beyond the stage.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges in my journey has been learning how to balance music with everyday life responsibilities. A lot of people see the performances, travel, and exciting moments, but behind the scenes there are late nights, long drives, scheduling sacrifices, and the discipline required to stay consistent while still managing personal life and growth outside of music.
Another challenge has been overcoming imposter syndrome as opportunities continue to grow. Sometimes when you step into bigger rooms or work alongside talented people you admire, it can be easy to quietly question whether you belong there. Over time, I’ve learned that growth requires stepping into uncomfortable spaces and trusting the preparation, experiences, and purpose that got me there in the first place.
Those challenges have ultimately helped shape me into a more grounded and intentional person. They’ve taught me discipline, humility, confidence, and the importance of continuing to grow both professionally and personally.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional drummer and specialize in pop, RnB, and Hip Hop Drumming known for taking on and overcoming challenges while also being relational in my different endeavors. I’ve worked with multiple artists, bands, and worship teams over my career and have been trusted with different levels of leadership throughout.
How do you think about happiness?
I love listening to new music and exploring different artists sound. Exploring around new cities and trying different foods. I love journaling, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.
