Rising Stars: Meet Rachel Fomby of South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Fomby.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been passionate about caring for people and helping them feel their best. Before esthetics, I spent over a decade working in veterinary medicine in ER and internal medicine, which gave me a strong foundation in patient care, attention to detail, and the importance of creating trust and comfort during vulnerable moments. Even though it was a completely different field, caring for others has always been at the center of what I do. Over time, I felt pulled toward skincare and wellness and decided to pursue esthetics. I fell in love with the combination of science, skin health, and helping people feel more confident in their own skin. What started as an interest quickly became a passion and a bigger vision for what I wanted to create. That’s how Skin Therapy came to life. I wanted to build a space in Columbia that feels both results-driven and welcoming. A place where clients can receive personalized skincare treatments, feel cared for, and genuinely relax. My approach is focused on healthy skin, education, and creating treatments tailored to each person’s needs, while also incorporating the calming, restorative side of self-care. I’m still growing and building, but I’m really grateful for where the journey has led and excited for what’s ahead.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been that getting started has been slower than I expected, especially when it comes to building a clientele. The beauty and esthetics industry can feel very saturated, so finding ways to stand out and build trust in the community has taken time and patience.
I’ve had to learn that growth doesn’t always happen as quickly as you picture it. There have been moments where I’ve questioned myself or felt discouraged, but I’ve also learned that building a business and building the right clientele is about consistency, relationships, and continuing to show up even when things feel slow. The slower pace has actually taught me a lot. It’s pushed me to be more intentional about the experience I create for clients, how I educate them, and how I build genuine connections. I’m still growing, but every client who trusts me with their skin and every step forward has been really meaningful, and I think building it steadily is creating a strong foundation for the long term.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Skin Therapy, I provide customized skincare treatments with a strong focus on both skin health and overall well-being. I specialize in personalized facials designed to support the skin while also creating space for clients to slow down, relax, and feel restored. My treatments often incorporate facial massage, intentional touch, and a calming environment because I truly believe skincare can be both results-driven and deeply healing. A big part of my approach is focusing on the nervous system. Life can feel overwhelming and fast-paced, and I love creating an experience where clients can genuinely exhale, reset, and reconnect with themselves while also caring for their skin. Facial massage is something I’m especially passionate about because it’s such a powerful combination of relaxation, circulation, tension release, and supporting healthy skin.
What I’m most proud of is creating an experience that feels personal and meaningful. I want every client to feel cared for when they walk in. Not rushed, not like a number, but truly seen and supported. I think what sets me apart is the balance of results and healing. Of course I care about helping clients improve their skin, but I also care about how they feel while they’re with me. I want Skin Therapy to be a place where skincare feels restorative. Where clients leave with healthier skin, but also feeling lighter, calmer, and taken care of.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think one of the biggest things is finding people who genuinely want to see you succeed. A good mentor isn’t just someone with experience. They’re someone who’s willing to share knowledge, encourage you, and help guide you through the ups and downs of building something. Having people around you who are supportive and invested in your growth can make such a difference. Networking has been really valuable for me, especially through BNI. It’s given me opportunities to connect with other business owners, build relationships in the community, and learn from people in different industries. Some of the most meaningful connections have also come from surrounding myself with like-minded women. Women who understand entrepreneurship, encourage each other, and genuinely celebrate each other’s wins. My biggest advice would be to put yourself out there, even before you feel completely ready. Go to networking events, introduce yourself, ask questions, and be open to building real relationships. And don’t underestimate the value of a strong support system. Having people around you who believe in what you’re building and cheer you on can make a huge difference.
