Exploring Life & Business with Shelby Wilson of Shelby Nord Piano Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Wilson.

Shelby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started learning piano from a young age and was inspired to play by friends and family. I always knew that I wanted to be a musician and participated in piano, choir, and jazz band in high school. I chose to continue music study and completed a bachelor’s in piano performance, a masters in piano performance and pedagogy, and began a doctorate in piano pedagogy, which is when I opened a local studio classroom for piano and music study. I so enjoyed learning great ways to share my joy for music making at the piano and watch students progress through pieces and skills that they can take with them and become life-long musicians.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have moved three different states in my journey through education, which has definitely had its challenges. The most important skill I learned along the way was managing time and money, which comes with experience. I made the most out of time I spent in different states and cities while building a library and studying.

We’ve been impressed with Shelby Nord Piano Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in teaching piano from beginning to advanced levels. I have presented research on Nordic piano music and other studies on the benefits of music study and practice techniques. I focus on an individual approach so that students have choice in what they are playing while learning basic skills and incorporating those in their repertoire. I’m so proud of the progress that I continually see as students progress through their pieces. I offer individual classes.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising about my work is that I try to include pieces from a variety of cultures.
