Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Richmond.
Hi Carrie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Carrie Richmond, founder of The Crystal Quill — a luxury crystal studio and creative sanctuary based in a historic second-story space in downtown Simpsonville, South Carolina.
My background is actually rooted in storytelling long before crystals ever entered the picture. I graduated from North Greenville University with a degree in Broadcast Communications and an English minor, and I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I’m also the author of Eyes on Fire and host of The Crystal Quill Podcast.
The Crystal Quill really came together at the intersection of all the things I love most: storytelling, beauty, intentional living, and creating meaningful experiences for people. What began as a personal fascination with crystals slowly evolved into a carefully curated business focused on museum-grade and heirloom-quality pieces for collectors, designers, and clients who are looking for something truly special.
I grew up in the Upstate and come from a multi-generation local family, so building something rooted here in this community felt deeply important to me. I wanted the space to feel different from a traditional retail environment — slower, more personal, more intentional. Every piece is hand-selected, and so much of the experience is about connection, atmosphere, and helping people bring beauty and meaning into their homes and lives.
At the same time, my creative work and personal life shaped the business just as much as the business shaped me. Motherhood, navigating neurodiversity in our family, personal growth, and learning to reconnect with my own intuition all influenced the direction of the brand and the conversations I now have through my podcast and writing.
Today, The Crystal Quill has grown into both a luxury crystal destination and a broader creative world — one that blends art, storytelling, design, and personal transformation in a way that feels very authentic to who I am.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most meaningful businesses, it definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. In many ways, The Crystal Quill was built during one of the most transformative and challenging seasons of my life personally and professionally.
One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to build something deeply creative while also balancing motherhood, family responsibilities, and the realities of entrepreneurship behind the scenes. People often see the finished product — the beautiful pieces, the curated space, the branding — but there are countless unseen hours of research, sourcing, logistics, photography, writing, marketing, customer care, and problem-solving that go into creating an experience that feels effortless for clients.
There was also a learning curve in carving out a space that felt authentic to me. I never wanted The Crystal Quill to feel transactional or trend-driven. I wanted it to feel elevated, intentional, and emotionally resonant — more like stepping into a story or sanctuary than simply shopping for décor. Staying true to that vision in a fast-moving online world sometimes meant growing more slowly and making choices based on long-term integrity rather than short-term trends.
Personally, I’ve also navigated seasons of burnout, stress, and growth that forced me to reevaluate how I was spending my time and energy. Ironically, some of the hardest moments became the catalyst for the most meaningful shifts creatively. They pushed me to reconnect with my writing, my voice, my intuition, and the deeper “why” behind everything I create.
At the end of the day, I think every challenge has shaped the business into something more grounded and more human. The road hasn’t been perfect, but I’m incredibly grateful for the way each season helped refine both the brand and the person behind it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Crystal Quill?
The Crystal Quill is a luxury crystal studio and creative sanctuary that blends fine mineral specimens, storytelling, design, and intentional living into one immersive experience. At its core, the brand is about curating beauty with meaning — pieces that feel emotionally resonant, visually striking, and deeply personal to the people who bring them into their homes.
We specialize in museum-grade and heirloom-quality crystal pieces, statement minerals, rare formations, luxury home décor styling pieces, and highly curated collector specimens. Every piece is personally hand-selected by me, often chosen not only for rarity and quality, but for its presence, energy, craftsmanship, and ability to transform a space aesthetically.
What sets The Crystal Quill apart is that it was never built to feel like a typical crystal shop. The experience is intentionally elevated, artistic, and emotionally immersive. The studio itself is designed more like a sanctuary or gallery space than a retail storefront, and the storytelling behind each piece is a major part of the experience. I care deeply about helping clients connect with pieces in a way that feels meaningful rather than transactional.
Beyond crystals, the brand has naturally expanded into a broader creative world through writing, podcasting, collaborations with other local businesses, curated experiences, and conversations around intuition, creativity, beauty, healing, and personal transformation. The Crystal Quill Podcast has become an extension of that — a space where I can speak more openly about creativity, growth, emotional wellness, entrepreneurship, and reconnecting with yourself in a world that often pushes people to disconnect from their inner voice.
One thing I’m especially proud of brand-wise is that The Crystal Quill feels genuinely authentic to who I am. Nothing about it was manufactured to fit a trend or formula. Every detail — from the curation style to the photography, the writing, the atmosphere of the studio, and even the pace at which the business has grown — has been intentionally shaped around creating an experience that feels thoughtful, beautiful, grounded, and deeply human.
I also care deeply about creating a sense of trust and discernment within the industry. Clients know that pieces are carefully sourced, ethically considered, and selected with an extremely high standard for quality and aesthetic presence. Many clients come to The Crystal Quill not just looking for a crystal, but looking for a piece that becomes part of their home, their story, or a meaningful chapter in their lives.
More than anything, I want readers to know that The Crystal Quill is ultimately about creating spaces, experiences, and objects that help people feel more connected — to beauty, to creativity, to inspiration, and to themselves.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that meaningful networking is much less about “working the room” and much more about building genuine relationships over time. Some of the most valuable connections in my life and business came from simply showing up consistently, being authentic, supporting other people’s work, and staying open to unexpected conversations and opportunities.
I also think it’s important to stop viewing mentors as only one formal person who has all the answers. Some of the most impactful mentorship I’ve received has come in small pieces from many different people — fellow business owners, creatives, authors, clients, friends, and even people I’ve admired from afar through podcasts, books, or classes. I try to stay curious and always ask myself, “What can I learn from this person?” rather than waiting for some perfect mentor relationship to appear.
What has worked especially well for me has been leaning into aligned community spaces and collaborations. Building relationships with other local women-owned businesses, creatives, wellness practitioners, and entrepreneurs has created opportunities that felt far more natural and sustainable than traditional networking ever did. I’ve found that when you genuinely champion other people and approach relationships from a place of connection rather than transaction, those relationships tend to organically grow into mentorship, collaboration, referrals, and support systems over time.
I also think discernment matters. Not every successful person is necessarily the right mentor for you. I pay close attention not only to what someone has built, but how they move through the world, how they treat people, whether their life actually reflects the values they teach, and whether being around them expands or contracts my own creativity and sense of self.
Most importantly, I’d encourage people not to wait until they feel “ready” or perfectly polished to start connecting with others. Some of the best opportunities come from simply being willing to start the conversation, share your work, ask thoughtful questions, and allow yourself to be seen before everything is figured out.
