Conversations with Tom Walsh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Walsh.

Hi Tom, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story really begins with a deep, lifelong pull toward helping animals, even though my early career took me in a very different direction. I spent years building a successful life in telecommunications—traveling, leading teams, and thriving in the fast-paced corporate world—but I always knew my true calling was animals. That inner voice grew louder until I finally listened, left it all behind, and pursued veterinary medicine with everything I had. After graduating, I spent nearly a decade as a general practitioner, caring for pets in everyday practice and loving every moment of it. But I kept seeing the same pattern: so many dogs and cats struggling to recover fully from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions, and I knew there had to be more we could do.

That realization led me to dive headfirst into small animal rehabilitation and therapy. After completing the canine rehab certification program at The University of Tennessee, I founded PrimePet Rehabilitation Therapy as a mobile service right here in the Myrtle Beach area. During the pandemic, all the veterinary offices were closed to the public. Several local vets agreed to allow me to perform post-surgical therapy and discuss options with their clients. It started small—just me, a pickup truck full of equipment, and a commitment to evidence-informed care that truly made a difference in mobility, pain relief, and quality of life. Within three years, the demand and the results were so strong that we transitioned the entire operation into a permanent, state-of-the-art facility in downtown Myrtle Beach. Today, PrimePet Rehab stands as one of the premier innovative small animal rehab centers on the East Coast, where we help thousands of animals recover from injury, regain performance, and maintain joyful mobility every year.

What drives everything at PrimePet is the Coerenza Approach—an integrative, whole-body method I developed that blends traditional rehab with emerging bioelectronic technologies and a deep respect for each animal’s unique needs. It’s not just about treating symptoms; it’s about restoring harmony and function so pets can live their best lives again. Whether it’s post-surgical recovery, arthritis management, or athletic conditioning for working or sporting dogs, our team focuses on personalized plans that combine manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy, laser treatments, and more—all delivered with the same compassion I felt when I first decided to become a vet.

Looking back, every step—from the corporate world to general practice to building PrimePet—has prepared me for this exact moment. I’m incredibly grateful to be exactly where I am, right here in South Carolina, surrounded by a community that values these animals as family. PrimePet Rehabilitation Therapy isn’t just my business; it’s the fulfillment of that original calling, and I wake up every day excited to keep expanding what’s possible for the pets we serve.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and I don’t think any truly meaningful journey ever is. Building PrimePet Rehab came with plenty of real challenges, especially in the early years.

We launched the mobile service right at the height of the pandemic. That timing meant navigating restrictions, supply chain issues, and a lot of uncertainty while trying to deliver hands-on care to pets in empty vet offices. At the same time, I was constantly wondering whether Myrtle Beach and the surrounding area could actually support an advanced, specialized rehabilitation service like ours—especially without a large local specialty hospital nearby. Many well-meaning local veterinarians told me repeatedly that the market was simply too small and there wasn’t a real need for what I was offering. Those conversations were tough to hear, but they only strengthened my resolve because I saw every day in practice how much pets were suffering without proper rehab options.

On top of that, the last five years have brought dramatic rising costs for small businesses—labor costs, equipment, insurance, staffing, you name it. And getting the word out to the public has been an ongoing effort. Pet owners often didn’t even know that advanced rehabilitation and physical therapy existed for dogs and cats, so educating the community while building trust took consistent time, energy, and creativity.

Through every one of those struggles, though, what kept me going was the same thing that pulled me into this work in the first place: the animals and their families. Seeing a dog that could barely walk after surgery take its first confident steps again, or watching an older cat with arthritis rediscover the joy of playing—these moments reminded me why the hard days were worth it. Each challenge taught me something valuable: how to be more resourceful, how to communicate the value of our Coerenza Approach more clearly, and how to build a team and a facility that could truly serve the community long-term.

Today, as we continue growing in our downtown Myrtle Beach location, I’m deeply grateful for those bumps in the road. They helped shape PrimePet into something stronger and more resilient, and they’ve reinforced my heart for this work—treating every animal with the integrative, compassionate care they deserve so they can live happier, more mobile lives. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At PrimePet Rehab, we specialize in advanced small animal rehabilitation and physical therapy for dogs and cats. Our focus is helping pets recover from injury or surgery, manage chronic conditions like arthritis and neurological issues, improve athletic performance, and maintain mobility and quality of life as they age.

We offer a full range of services including therapeutic exercises, massage therapy, hydrotherapy (underwater treadmill), laser therapy, acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and emerging bioelectronic modalities—all delivered through our unique approach. This is an integrative, evidence-informed framework that treats the whole animal, not just the symptoms. It combines the best of traditional rehab techniques with innovative technologies to restore harmony, reduce pain, and help each pet return to the activities they love.

What we’re known for locally and increasingly nationally is our personalized, compassionate care and our results. Pet owners often tell us their dogs or cats are moving better, playing again, and enjoying life more than they have in years—sometimes after other options had stopped working. I’m especially proud of the fact that in just a few short years we’ve helped thousands of animals here on the Grand Strand and beyond.

What truly sets PrimePet apart is the combination of three things:

My unique background—nearly a decade as a general practitioner vet plus years in the corporate world—which gives me a practical perspective on delivering high-quality care in a way that’s sustainable and accessible.

Our downtown Myrtle Beach facility, which is one of the most innovative and well-equipped small animal rehab centers on the East Coast.

The approach itself, which bridges conventional veterinary rehab with cutting-edge bioelectronic technologies in a way that very few practices are doing right now.

Most of all, I’m proud of the culture we’ve built. Every team member shares my deep passion for this work and treats every pet like family. We don’t just “do rehab”—we restore hope and joy for pets and their people. That human-animal bond is at the heart of everything we do, and seeing families light up when their beloved companion starts wagging their tail or jumping on the couch again is the best part of every day.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My best advice for someone seeking a mentor is to be intentional but also open and generous. Don’t wait for the “perfect” mentor to appear—start by seeking out people who are a few steps ahead of you in the areas that matter most to your work. Reach out with genuine curiosity and a willingness to learn. I’ve found that most experienced professionals are happy to share their insights if you approach them respectfully and show that you’re truly committed to the field.

For me, networking worked best when I focused on relationships rather than transactions. Early on, I attended veterinary conferences, rehabilitation workshops, and local business events here on the Grand Strand. I connected with colleagues who specialized in rehab and sports medicine. Some of the most meaningful guidance came from informal conversations—talking with other practice owners, shadowing specialists, or simply listening at continuing education seminars.

What’s worked especially well for me is staying rooted in my “why”: the deep passion for helping animals recover and thrive. When you lead with that heart-centered purpose, conversations flow more naturally and the right people tend to show up. I also made it a point to give back—developing my approach, offering to speak at local events, or helping other vets understand the value of rehabilitation. That generosity often turned into reciprocal support and long-term connections.

Another practical tip: document your own journey and results. When you can clearly show how your work is improving pets’ lives (before-and-after stories, client feedback, measurable mobility gains), it becomes much easier to attract mentors and collaborators who see the value in what you’re building.

At the end of the day, the veterinary and rehab community is full of kind, dedicated people who genuinely want to see animals—and the professionals who serve them—succeed. Be proactive, stay humble, listen more than you speak at first, and never underestimate the power of showing up consistently with integrity and love for the animals. Those relationships have been some of the greatest gifts along the way, and they continue to help PrimePet Rehab grow while staying true to our mission.
