Inspiring Conversations with Daniel Ott of UNBRAND3D Printing and Prototyping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Ott.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
UNBRAND3D was born out of a desire to explore and create. During the lockdown in 2020, I had an idea for a product that would enhance my new disc golf hobby but had no way to turn it into a physical reality. After months of dreaming about how to make it real, I stumbled upon a Reddit discussion about 3D printing, which sent me down a rabbit hole I’ve enjoyed exploring ever since.

Over the last six years, one printer turned into two, then three, and now into the fleet it is today. Two years ago, my family and I moved from Virginia to Columbia, where this passion quickly evolved into a professional venture. I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to turn many innovator’s ideas into reality, reverse-engineer discontinued parts, and help others enter the hobby by repairing equipment and sharing technical knowledge.

My mission is to make 3D printing accessible to the Columbia area through expert printing, design, scanning, repair, and educational services.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been just fun and games. 6 years ago the 3D printing landscape was very different and had a much steeper learning curve. But this challenge helped set the foundation needed to help others with their printers and projects.

Learning how to turn a hobby into a business has been full of surprises and learnings too. My biggest struggles have been balancing my time between family and work and finding my niche in the Columbia market. While I want to do everything for everyone, I have learned that I must focus on the core things that I am best equipped to offer to bring the most value to the area.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
UNBRAND3D is a full-service 3D design, scanning, prototyping, and repair studio. We specialize in taking concepts from a rough sketch or a broken physical part and turning them into high-quality, functional realities. While many see 3D printing as a hobby, we focus on the technical side: industrial-grade prototyping, reverse-engineering discontinued mechanical parts, and providing custom repair solutions that you simply can’t find in a traditional store.

I am most proud of our reputation for solving the ‘unsolvable.’ Whether it’s helping a local business get a production line back up and running by recreating a broken part that hasn’t been manufactured in twenty years, or helping an entrepreneur hold their first physical prototype in their hands, we take pride in being the bridge between an idea and a tangible object. Our brand is built on transparency, technical mastery, and the joy of creation.

I want readers to know that 3D printing is no longer just for trinkets or hobbiests; it is a powerful tool for local businesses, engineers, and creators. Whether you need a one-off custom gift, a bulk order of specialized parts, or a complex mechanical prototype, UNBRAND3D is here to make that technology accessible.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the most important characteristic for success is a commitment to radical transparency and honesty. In any professional relationship, trust is the fundamental currency, and that is built by being upfront about capabilities, timelines, and processes.

Beyond those core values, I lead with a philosophy of empathy-driven service: treating every customer exactly how I would have wanted to be treated when I first started out. It’s about bridging the gap between professional expertise and the genuine needs of a beginner. Finally, this is all fueled by a relentless passion for learning. Success isn’t static, so staying curious and constantly evolving ensures that the value I provide today is even better tomorrow.
