Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Mayes.
Hi Tamara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t start out with a perfectly mapped plan—I started with a desire to create more freedom and build something of my own.
Southern Shine Maids began while I was still working a traditional job. At the time, I was looking for an additional stream of income, but what I found was an opportunity to build something much bigger. Like many entrepreneurs, I started with general residential cleaning and learned the business from the ground up—handling clients, managing schedules, and figuring things out in real time.
As I gained experience, I started to think more strategically about what it would take to build a business that could actually scale. That led me to shift Southern Shine Maids into focusing specifically on property turnovers and post-construction clean-up, where there was a stronger long-term opportunity and a more defined client base.
From there, I expanded into Southern Shine Exterior Care, where we now offer services like pressure washing, deck staining, and fence and structure installations. That expansion allowed me to move beyond just interior services and create a more complete solution for property owners.
At the same time, I developed a strong interest in automation and AI, and I’ve been integrating those tools into my operations to streamline processes and build smarter systems behind the scenes.
Right now, I’m in a transition phase—stepping fully into entrepreneurship and focusing on scaling both businesses with structure and intention. It hasn’t been a perfect journey, but every step has pushed me to think bigger, move smarter, and build something with long-term impact.
And if my story shows anything, it’s that you don’t have to have everything figured out to start—you just have to be willing to take that first step and stay committed to the process.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road—but every challenge has played a role in shaping the direction of the business.
One of the biggest challenges has been making the decision to shift and evolve. Moving from general cleaning into property turnovers, post-construction clean-up, and exterior services required restructuring the business, refining our services, and stepping into a more strategic mindset.
That kind of transition comes with uncertainty. You’re letting go of what’s familiar while building something new at the same time.
Another challenge has been managing growth while building reliable systems and a dependable team. Service-based businesses require strong operations, and developing those systems while actively working in the business takes time and discipline.
On a personal level, I’ve had to push through moments of doubt and learn to trust my decisions—especially when making bigger moves like expanding into new services and stepping further into entrepreneurship.
But those challenges have ultimately made me a stronger business owner. They’ve forced me to think long-term, stay adaptable, and build with intention instead of just reacting.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I own and operate Southern Shine Maids and Southern Shine Exterior Care, two service-based businesses that work together to support property owners, investors, and businesses with both interior and exterior property needs.
Southern Shine Maids focuses on property turnovers and post-construction clean-up, providing detailed, reliable services for properties that need to be prepared quickly and professionally between tenants, after renovations, or before going to market.
Southern Shine Exterior Care is where we’re placing a major focus moving forward. We provide pressure washing, property washing, deck staining, and fence and structure installations, helping clients maintain and improve the exterior of their properties.
What sets us apart is how we approach the business behind the service. I focus heavily on building systems and efficiency, integrating automation and AI into our processes so we can operate more effectively, respond faster, and create a better overall experience for our clients.
I’m most proud of how we’ve evolved. We’ve moved from offering general services to building a more structured, specialized, and scalable operation that’s designed for long-term growth.
If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s that we’re a reliable, forward-thinking partner for property owners who want their spaces handled with care and efficiency—whether that’s preparing a property for its next tenant or improving its overall condition inside and out.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The biggest thing I would say is—don’t get too attached to your first version of the business.
What you start with is not always what you’re meant to scale. I started with general cleaning, but as I gained experience, I saw opportunities in more specialized services like turnovers, post-construction clean-up, and exterior work—and I made the decision to pivot.
A lot of people hesitate to make changes because they think it means they failed, but really it means you’re learning and making better decisions.
I’d also recommend building systems early. Even if you’re a one-person operation, start thinking about how things will run when you grow. That mindset will save you time and stress later.
And most importantly—stay consistent. There will be slow periods, challenges, and moments where things don’t go as planned. That’s part of the process.
Keep moving, keep learning, and trust that you’re building something that will come together over time. And don’t be afraid to put yourself out there—opportunities often come from simply being visible and willing to take the next step.
