Conversations with Tara Simmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Simmons.

Hi Tara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into photography wasn’t planned — it was something I felt called to do.

I didn’t come from an artistic background, and I never imagined I’d be in this space. Photography was not on my radar at all but I felt a strong pull to pick up a camera and I listened. From that moment on, everything became a process of learning, trusting my eye, and creating with intention. I’m entirely self-taught, and that freedom allowed me to develop a style that feels authentic to me.

What started as obedience turned into purpose. I found that purpose in working with models — helping them build their portfolios, refine their presence, and see themselves in a more elevated way.

Today, my work is rooted in beauty and fashion, creating imagery that feels elevated, intentional, and true to the people in front of my lens.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all.

Building a business from the ground up is a challenge on its own, but what really tests you is learning how to navigate the unexpected. There are moments where you have to find solutions in real time, make decisions quickly, and keep moving regardless.

With the rise of AI and an increasingly competitive industry, there are challenges with staying relevant and standing out. But those moments have pushed me to refine my vision, strengthen my skills, and move with more intention.

So no, it has absolutely NOT been smooth — but it’s been necessary.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a beauty and fashion photographer with a strong focus on working with models to build and elevate their portfolios.

I’m known for creating clean, polished, editorial-style imagery that feels intentional and elevated –but beyond that, I create experiences. Through my Capture + Connect sessions, I give models the opportunity to not only build their portfolios, but also network and grow within the industry.

What I’m most proud of is the impact. Watching someone come in one way and leave seeing themselves differently — that’s the work for me.

What sets me apart is my eye and my intention. I’m not just taking pictures — I direct, refine, and create with purpose. In a space that’s becoming more saturated, I make sure my work stands out and speaks for itself.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I had an amazing childhood, so it’s honestly hard to pinpoint just one memory. But the first thing that came to mind for this interview is when I used a digital camera and tried to take a picture down my throat with the flash on lol. I was definitely sick — and at the time, I had NO interest in photography whatsoever.

Looking back, it’s funny how life comes full circle. Even though I didn’t see it then, that curiosity and willingness to experiment is something I still carry into my work today.
