Today we’d like to introduce you to Malai Roper, PhD.
Malai, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story really started before Peaceful Pause Healing ever had a name.
I’m originally from Charleston, South Carolina, and I come from Gullah Geechee roots. Being around women who understood care, intuition, and tending to others shaped me in ways I didn’t fully realize at the time. I didn’t grow up calling it “healing work,” but looking back, it was always there.
Professionally, I started in education, and that work grounded me. It taught me how to hold space for people, how to meet them where they are, and how to support growth in a real, practical way.
At the same time, I was on my own personal journey. I was dealing with stress, life transitions, and trying to stay connected to myself. That is what led me into yoga, Reiki, Ayurvedic practices, massage therapy, and metaphysics.
It wasn’t about starting a business. It was about finding something that actually helped me feel better.
Over time, I started working with others, and I noticed a pattern. So many women were carrying a lot, but did not have a space that felt safe, grounded, and consistent enough to truly slow down.
That is what led me to create Peaceful Pause Healing. It is a women’s healing space where the focus is simple. Helping women come back to themselves through bodywork, energy therapy, and intentional rest.
Now, my work has grown into something deeper. I see myself as a feminine metaphysician, but at the core, I am creating space for women to pause, breathe, and reconnect in a way that feels real and sustainable.
That is the heart of it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and I don’t think it’s supposed to be.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to trust myself. There were seasons where I was building something new while still working, navigating uncertainty, and trying to figure out what this work was really meant to become.
There have also been some important shifts along the way. One of the biggest was moving into serving women only and allowing the space to fully become a feminine space. That required me to get really clear about who I am called to support, even if it meant not being for everyone.
Another shift was moving away from more Western approaches and leaning into Eastern traditions that felt more aligned with how I grew up and what I believe in. That transition asked me to trust my own voice and not just follow what is popular or expected in the wellness space.
I’ve also had to learn how to simplify. In the beginning, I wanted to offer everything I had learned, but over time I realized that doing less, with more intention, created a better experience for both me and my clients.
There have been slower seasons too. Times where things didn’t grow as quickly as I expected, or where I questioned if I was on the right path. But those moments helped me refine my work, get clearer on who I serve, and build something that actually feels sustainable.
Now, I move differently. I trust my pace more, I’m more intentional with what I offer, and I’m building something that feels aligned instead of rushed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Peaceful Pause Healing, I offer a range of services centered around women’s healing, including bodywork, energy therapy, and sound medicine. My work blends practices like Reiki, Ayurvedic care, yoga, and massage therapy in a way that feels personalized and supportive to each woman I work with.
Over time, the space has grown to include additional offerings such as Ayurvedic inspired skin therapy and assisted stretch therapy. Everything within the space is rooted in the same intention of care, presence, and helping women feel supported in their bodies.
A big part of my work also includes what I call soul work. This is where we move beyond the physical body and into deeper reflection, clarity, and energetic alignment. It often shows up through conversation, intuitive guidance, and helping women reconnect with themselves in a more intentional way.
What I specialize in is helping women slow down and reconnect with themselves. Many of the women I see are carrying stress, navigating transitions, or simply feeling disconnected from their bodies. My work creates space for them to rest, reset, and come back into alignment in a way that feels grounded and sustainable.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space that feels consistent and real. It’s not about trends or quick fixes. It’s about building trust, offering care that meets people where they are, and creating an environment where women feel safe to just be.
What sets my work apart is the level of personalization and intention behind it, but also the fact that this work is deeply rooted in who I am. It comes from my lineage, my West African roots, and the way I was raised. It’s not something I force. It’s something I’ve grown into, and it flows naturally through the work I do.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that might surprise people is how simple and intentional I am in both my life and my work.
From the outside, people sometimes expect it to be complex or overly spiritual, but for me, it’s very grounded. It’s about presence, listening, and paying attention to what’s actually happening in the body and the moment.
I’m also very mindful about protecting my peace. I’ve learned that I can’t offer this kind of work without being grounded in my own life first, so I move with a lot of intention in how I care for myself and how I show up.
Over time, I’ve also become very clear about who I’m called to serve. I don’t try to be everything to everyone, and that has allowed me to build something that feels honest and aligned.
At the end of the day, the work is deep, but the way I live and approach it is very simple. It’s not forced. It’s something I’ve grown into, and it continues to evolve in a natural way.
