Meet Jamie Richardson of Palmetto Group Insurance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Richardson.

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Jamie Richardson is a South Carolina native from Columbia and a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he developed both his professional foundation and lifelong support for the university. Inspired by his father’s 30+ year career in the insurance industry, Jamie began his own journey immediately after college with Nationwide Insurance as a claims adjuster.

During his early career, Jamie specialized in claim investigations, coordinating repairs, and guiding clients through challenging situations. After two years in claims, he transitioned into the agency side of the business, where he spent three years as an associate agent building sales expertise and deepening his understanding of client needs.

In 2013, James accepted a sales manager role with Nationwide, relocating to Charleston, SC. While thriving in this leadership position, he began pursuing his long-term goal of business ownership. In 2016, he took a leap of faith and founded Palmetto Group Insurance from the ground up—starting with no clients and building the agency through determination, relationships, and a strong belief in his vision.

That same year marked a major personal milestone as well, with his engagement to his wife Mindy, the birth of their daughter Kelsie, and the purchase of their family home. From its beginnings on Daniel Island, the agency has grown steadily, relocating to Johns Island in 2023, where it continues to serve the local community.

Palmetto Group Insurance is a full-service independent agency offering customized solutions for home, auto, motorcycle, boat, umbrella, and commercial insurance needs. By partnering with top insurance carriers, Jamie and his team provide competitive, tailored coverage with a strong emphasis on personal service—especially important for clients navigating the unique challenges of coastal living.

Community involvement is at the heart of the agency’s mission. Jamie is an active supporter of local schools, youth sports, the PTA, and the Chamber of Commerce. He takes pride in building meaningful relationships and giving back to the Johns Island community.

Above all, Jamie values his role as a husband and father. His wife Mindy is also a local business owner, working as a travel consultant, and together they share a passion for exploring new places. Jamie cherishes the flexibility his business provides, allowing him to stay actively involved in his daughter’s life—from school drop-offs to sports and activities.

As Palmetto Group Insurance approaches its 10-year anniversary, Jamie remains committed to delivering exceptional service, strengthening community ties, and continuing to grow a business built on trust, relationships, and care.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first few years just like any other business has challenges. Being able to acquire insurance company appointments to determining what type of clients to work with to increasing high prices for coastal locations.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Palmetto Group Insurance?
Our agency specializes in property insurance and having available solutions in a challenging market. We review all policies at each renewal and stay proactive to confirm best prices to our clients. We value relationships with our clients and truly care about them and their needs and coverage. We value being involved in the local community with local schools, churches, and many local events throughout the year.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson is to consistently learn and improve on your job skills each and every day. That’s regardless of how long you have been in the current role or industry. I try and learn something new every day rather that’s a new coverage, information about my client, potential needs for my client, or new markets consistently coming available. Also really take advantage of your skill sets and making sure your team member also capitalize on their skill sets.
