Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Tucker.
Hi Shelley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a divorced mother of three children, working full time while putting myself through college. I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and I worked in that field for 10+ years. One morning while sitting at my desk, I prayed and told the Lord that I wanted to help people. Later that afternoon, while on facebook, an ad popped up for an insurance agent position. Ironically, the ad was posted by an acquaintance I met years earlier. For some reason I knew this was it! We had an eye opening conversation, and that is when the tide began to turn. Once I passed my state insurance exam, I put in my two weeks notice. I was so sure that this was going to work that I left a salaried position and started a commission only business. Failure was not an option! I started my sales career door knocking mostly aged leads. I drove everywhere. I mean everywhere. Wherever the leads were, I went. I helped so many people. If I wasn’t able to help them, I made a friend. It was the most rewarding experience I had ever had. Don’t get me wrong. There were hard days also. Days that I didn’t sell or got cussed out, but my coach drilled it into me to knock “just one more door”. Keep going. Don’t give up. Have a positive attitude. Don’t complain. The amazing part is that I was able to build a sizable of business while impacting lives. Fast forward 5.5 years- my husband & I moved from Charleston, SC to Seneca, SC. I attended a BNI meeting, and was introduced to an insurance broker who presented me with an opportunity to rent an office. I wasn’t looking for an office mind you. I loved going out into the community, but God had other plans. It was a new season so we moved into an office that a previous insurance company occupied for 12 years. The previous company offered the same services that I do even down to the same carriers (stickers on the windows included). There are so many things that worked out miraculously during the transition. New Life Insurance Agency is in a prime location, and we are growing! God is good!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. There was pressure in the beginning because I wasn’t getting a salary anymore. Sales are mental. It’s important to have a clear mind, because if you get “commission breath” you won’t sell. Sometimes it is a struggle to stay motivated. It is very important to surround yourself with others that have similar goals and those that have achieved much higher goals both personally and professionally. Never stop learning. If you think you know everything, you know nothing.
As you know, we’re big fans of New Life Insurance Agency. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We offer life and health insurance, Medicare guidance, retirement strategies, and annuities designed to fit your goals. Whether you’re raising a family, approaching Medicare, or securing steady income for retirement, we make your options simple and personal.
I am most proud of our genuine concern for our clients well being, and the customer service we provide. If we don’t have an answer, we will find it. If we can’t help with a certain need, we will find someone that can. We have integrity, and we will stand on that over making a dollar any day of the week.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that I traveled across the United States, bought a license in every state that we stayed, knocked doors, and wrote business. If you want to succeed, you can and you will!
