Conversations with Suzanne Humphreys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Humphreys.

Hi Suzanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My husband, son and I stumbled upon Sunrise Farm B&B many years ago, when we visited the Upstate of South Carolina to hike, admire the changing of the fall leaves, and visit the many waterfalls in the area. Staying at Sunrise Farm B&B offers a nostalgic “step back in time” experience. The rural area offers an intimate interaction with nature, and a slower pace of life compared to urban environments. The farm setting provides a refreshing, peaceful escape with a menagerie of farm pets to love – Cisco the llama, Salem the cat, Lady and Sunshine, the miniature horses, and our goats: Lulu, Honey, Peaches and Willoughby.
Located about 3 miles from Lake Jocassee, the B&B was initially established in the 1980’s. The beautifully restored farmhouse sits on the remaining 10 acres of the original 1000 acres cotton plantation.
We purchased the B&B in 2018. As owners and Innkeepers, our goal is to provide our guests with an enjoyable, fun, and memorable experience. We offer fresh baked cookies at check-in, and guests are served a full sumptuous breakfast each morning, featuring all-natural ingredients, fresh local produce, and homemade specialties such as cranberry-orange pecan scones, fresh fruit with house-made granola, blueberry buttermilk pancakes, and garden veggie and herb frittata, with local sausage and oven-baked peppered bacon. The menu changes with the seasons.
Our family loves people, and this is the perfect setting for us to share our home and our hearts with the people we welcome to Sunrise Farm B&B. We hope our guests will love this special place we call home, as much as we do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Maintaining a house that is over a hundred years old! There’s always repairs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for many years. I grew up in a small town in Iowa. My husband worked in the film and theater industry. He’s originally from South Africa. Our son is a singer/songwriter and farrier. He was born in South Africa, but we’ve traveled, and moved frequently during his youth, so he’s been exposed to city life, and a rural lifestyle. As a family, we have also served in children’s ministry, caring for displaced children. At one time, we had 9 children in our care. In all of our work, relationships are paramount. Our faith in Christ motivates us, and sustains us. We enjoy meeting folks from all walks of life, and hearing their stories. It’s so inspiring!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe that life is designed with purpose by God, not ruled by random accidents.
