Life & Work with Kelli Duncan of Mill Spring, NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Duncan.

Hi Kelli, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 1996, my parents bought a raw piece of land with the dream of building a farm. Over the next 19 years, my father worked every day on fences, fields, animals, buildings, equipment, and all things whether large or small that were required of him on this farm. That legacy that he built was passed the day he died unexpectedly in an automobile accident.

Life on a farm does not stop when tragedy strikes. Animals still need fed, fences still need mended and life goes on.

This is where we come in. My husband has talents that I absolutely had no idea he possessed when I married him. His ability to pick up and carry all the burdens that my father carried has amazed me beyond belief.

In the blink of an eye, I went from the Farmer’s Daughter to the Farmer’s Wife.
We have created Living Water Retreats to sustain our farm in a new way and to allow us to share the beauty of what my father created!

We love having guests visit and they love exploring, meeting our animals, and come back year after year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ahh, see the previous answer. Building our homes was actually really interesting! A local high school built the first one and it was moved here. We finished it on site once they had the shell completed.

The second was built on site by high school students too!

We got them both ready in time for the World Equestrian Games and we have been fully booked during Equestrian season since!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our houses serve mostly vacationing equestrian guests who travel to our area to visit and compete at the Tryon Equestrian Center. We hope to include Winter Retreats in the future to take advantage of the off-season for guests who would like a more spiritual visit. We also love hosting guests who are in tue area to visit our local vineyards and the beautiful (and rising again) Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Our goal is to eventually have a conference center, and 6 total houses for our retreats. We would love to host small groups that need a central location for meetings and additional spaces for sleeping. We hope to create a special place for guests who need just a little more than the average home rental.
