Exploring Life & Business with Liz of Tie-Out Bookkeeping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz.

Hi Liz, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Carl and I started our careers in Oregon, where we built and operated businesses together. That’s actually where I was first introduced to bookkeeping — not from textbooks, but inside a real, growing company.

Carl brought in CPAs, CFOs, and seasoned bookkeepers to teach me how to do things the right way. While I do have an associate’s degree in business administration and accounting, most of what I know came from real-world experience — what I like to call the ‘School of Hard Knocks.’ And that foundation still shapes how I approach my work today.

When the pandemic hit, Oregon implemented strict shutdowns. We did everything we could to keep our doors open; supporting our team, managing expenses, and trying to wait it out. But like many business owners, we eventually had to make difficult decision to close the businesses.

That transition brought us to the East Coast, where I began working in CPA and bookkeeping firms. There, I continued building my knowledge and expertise across a wide variety of industries— from restaurants and property management to nonprofits, professional services, and more.

With Carl’s encouragement (and a little pushing), we decided it was time to launch my own bookkeeping company.

So while the road hasn’t been a straight line, every step has given us the skills, perspective, and drive to build the firm we run today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like a lot of business owners, some of our biggest challenges came during the pandemic. We went from running multiple businesses to having to make difficult decisions about closing them, laying off employees, and starting over in a completely new place.

That transition was both professionally and personally challenging. Rebuilding in a new state meant stepping into unfamiliar environments, learning new systems, and finding our footing again.

Even after that, one of the biggest challenges I faced was burnout. Working inside firms, I saw firsthand how easy it is for both business owners and bookkeepers to become overwhelmed when processes aren’t sustainable or expectations aren’t clear.

Those experiences really shaped how I approach my work today. They pushed me to build something more structured and supportive. both for our clients and behind the scenes, so that growth doesn’t come at the cost of burnout or constant stress.

We’ve been impressed with Tie-Out Bookkeeping, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tie-Out Bookkeeping supports businesses by keeping their financials organized, accurate, and easy to understand. Our goal is to give business owners clarity and confidence in their numbers, so they always know where they stand and can make informed decisions.

What sets us apart is how we approach bookkeeping. We don’t just process transactions, we focus on building clean, consistent systems that actually support the business long-term. Every account is handled with care and precision, and we prioritize clear communication so our clients aren’t left guessing about their financials.

We offer flexible bookkeeping support based on each client’s needs, whether that’s weekly, monthly, or periodic work. In addition to core bookkeeping, we also provide payroll management, sales tax management, catch-up and clean-up services, and 1099 filing and vendor reporting.

At the core of everything we do is a commitment to quality, integrity, and accuracy. We take pride in delivering reliable financials our clients can trust, while creating processes that reduce stress instead of adding to it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take away, it’s that you don’t have to have everything figured out to run a successful business, and you don’t have to manage it all on your own.

A lot of the business owners we work with are capable, driven, and doing great work, but they’ve been left to navigate their financials without the right support. That’s where we come in.

Our goal is to make things clearer, more manageable, and less stressful, so business owners can focus on what they do best, knowing their financials are being handled with care.
