Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I worked a job at a production plant for ten years. In that time my son was getting older and needed me at home more and more. Also, I started my own little homestead with chickens and a garden. It was my little piece of paradise.
About a year and a half ago, I was involved in a serious car accident and I started seeing what was really important in life more clearly. I started to pay off my debt and 8 months later, I put in my notice and worked my first gig farm sitting.
Farm sitting is just like pet sitting but on a bigger scale. My first gig had pigs and goats and chickens as well as cats and dogs. I have this connection with all animals, big and small. I just love to take care of them.
My next job was at a horse farm in Six Mile. I took care of 8-14 horses at a time including giving medication, turn-in and turn-out, feedings, and blanketing. I got very attached to several of the horses and loved them all very much. In the meantime, I was making connections with farmers and horse owners trying to help my business flourish.
I am still at the beginning stages of building my business. It’s been an interesting process building trust with the farming community. I am so grateful for the people that have entrusted me with their homes, livestock, and their pets.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been tougher than I imagined. I work several odd jobs to supplement my income. Finding time to advertise has been a struggle as well but I am convinced that word of mouth will be my best advocate so, I take as many small jobs as I can.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone and going after work that I enjoy. What sets me apart is that I can take care of larger animals and I am willing to come and stay at a farm while the family is able to take a vacation or business trip.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I am able to understand what the customer needs and exceed expectations. I understand how important it is that I take care of their livelihood and keep them updated several times a day.
