Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Richardson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I officially launched Daniel Island Paws and Claws in 2023, but the heart behind it started years earlier. I’ve always had a deep love for animals, and over time I naturally became the person friends and neighbors trusted to care for their pets. What began as simply helping out grew into something much greater when I recognized a genuine need in our community for dependable, professional, in-home pet care that still felt personal and thoughtful.
This isn’t just something I do — it’s who I am.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any business journey is completely smooth and mine definitely hasn’t been but every challenge has shaped how we operate today.
In the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was capacity. Demand grew much faster than I anticipated, which was an incredible blessing, but it also meant long days, tight yet intentional scheduling, and learning how to build systems quickly so absolutely nothing fell through the cracks. As a service-based business that operates in clients’ homes, there’s no room for inconsistency so creating strong processes, clear communication, and reliable coverage was essential.
Another challenge was transitioning from doing everything myself to leading a team. Handing over care to other team members required deep trust, intentional training, and high standards. I’ve always been protective of the quality of care we provide, so building a team that reflects those values took time and patience.
There have also been the normal growing pains of entrepreneurship – navigating pricing, setting boundaries, managing holidays and burnout, and balancing my other professional responsibilities. Learning to protect my time while still serving clients well was a big lesson.
But every obstacle has strengthened the foundation of the business. The systems are better, the team is stronger, and I’m more confident as a leader. What hasn’t changed is the heart behind it – providing dependable, loving care that families can truly trust.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a professional, in-home pet care business serving Daniel Island and the surrounding Charleston communities. We specialize in drop-in visits for both cats and dogs, dog walking, overnight stays, house sitting, adventure walks, and pet taxi services – all designed to keep pets comfortable in their own homes while their families are away.
What truly sets us apart is the level of professionalism behind the love. I come from a background in healthcare and practice management, so our business is structured, organized, and detail-driven. We use thorough intake questionnaires, customized care plans, clear communication, and consistent visit updates so clients always feel informed and at ease. We’re licensed, insured, bonded, and First Aid certified through the American Red Cross.
We’re especially known for reliability, strong communication, and building genuine relationships with our clients and their pets. Many of our families have complex routines, multiple pets, or animals with medical or behavioral needs, and we pride ourselves on being attentive, adaptable, and trustworthy. Because we operate in clients’ homes, discretion and respect for their space is a huge part of our brand as well.
Another thing that sets us apart is that we don’t aim to be the biggest – we aim to be the most dependable. We intentionally schedule our days at a pace that allows us to maintain quality and consistency. Our team is small, carefully selected, and aligned with the same standards of care and professionalism.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Daniel Island Paws and Claws feels both warm and elevated. We’ve been honored as a 2024 and 2025 Best of South Carolina Regional Winner/Honorable Mention for Pet Sitting, received Gold and Silver for Best Pet Sitter in Community Votes Mt. Pleasant in 2024 and 2025 and we were recently named a top 3 finalist in the 2025 Post & Courier’s Charleston’s Choice – which meant so much because it reflected trust from our own community. But beyond awards, I’m proud that our brand stands for integrity, heart, and excellence.
I want readers to know that we’re more than just “pet sitters.” We are trusted partners in the care of their pets and their homes. Our goal is simple: to provide peace of mind, consistent care, and genuine love – every single visit. 🐾
What was your favorite childhood memory?
All of my memories from childhood are my favorite because they include my brother, Garrett. He passed away at 23 in 2021, and every moment we shared means the world to me. I truly cherish them all.
