Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrica May.
Hi Demetrica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the spa industry started with a genuine love for skincare and helping people feel confident in their own skin. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a calling. I trained at the Elaine Sterling Institute in Atlanta, GA and became a licensed CIDESCO/ITEC esthetician in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, which gave me a strong foundation in both advanced skincare and professional waxing.
Along the way, I realized I didn’t just want to perform services — I wanted to create a space where clients feel seen, cared for, and empowered. That vision became DBellaesthetics. Starting my own spa meant learning everything from perfecting my craft to building trust, consistency, and community one client at a time.
Today, I specialize in waxing and facials, with a strong focus on education, skin health, and comfort. I continue to grow, learn, and expand my services — including incorporating sugaring — while staying rooted in the same passion that started it all: helping people look good, feel good, and leave confident.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. As an older Black woman, I’ve had to navigate spaces where I was sometimes underestimated or where my experience wasn’t immediately recognized. There were moments when I had to work harder to be seen, heard, and valued while balancing multiple responsibilities and continuing to grow professionally. These challenges required resilience, self-advocacy, and confidence in my skills. They ultimately strengthened my leadership, adaptability, and commitment to excellence, and they shape how I now approach my work—with empathy, persistence, and a strong sense of purpose.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I wear two hats that are deeply connected by service and care. I’m an educator and family engagement specialist by day and a licensed CIDESCO/ITEC esthetician serving clients in South Carolina in the evening and on the weekends. I’m also bilingual in English and Spanish, which allows me to connect with and empower a wider range of families and clients. As previous stated,In education, I focus on family engagement—especially working with multilingual and ESOL families—to help them feel seen, supported, and involved in their children’s learning. In my skincare practice, DBellaesthetics, I specialize in waxing and results-driven facials, with a strong emphasis on client comfort, education, and confidence. I’m also expanding my skills to include sugaring.
I’m known for creating safe, welcoming spaces—whether that’s in a classroom, a workshop, or a treatment room. People often tell me I have a calming presence and that I genuinely listen. I take pride in meeting people where they are and helping them feel confident, informed, and respected.
What I’m most proud of is building trust across cultures and industries. As both an educator and esthetician, I bridge wellness, education, and community in a way that’s uncommon. What sets me apart is that I don’t just provide a service—I build relationships. My work is rooted in empathy, professionalism, and a deep belief that everyone deserves to feel empowered, whether in their skin or in their life
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t think of myself as a reckless risk-taker, but I do believe in taking calculated risks that push me toward growth. One of the biggest risks I ever took was moving to a city where I didn’t know many people—almost no one, in fact. The only thing I really knew about the city was the Gamecocks women’s basketball team. It was a huge leap into the unknown: a new environment, new routines, and the challenge of building both a social and professional network from scratch.
That experience taught me a lot about trusting myself and embracing discomfort. I had to be intentional about meeting people, exploring opportunities, and creating a sense of home and community in a place that was completely unfamiliar. Looking back, that risk helped me grow in confidence, resilience, and independence—it reminded me that sometimes the biggest opportunities come from stepping outside what feels safe and familiar.
For me, risk isn’t about acting without caution; it’s about thoughtfully evaluating the challenge, trusting my skills and instincts, and moving forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
